If you want studio-grade accuracy and open-air immersion for critical listening while stationary, choose Audeze MM-100; if you need a secure, bass-forward fit that stays put during intense movement like running, choose CVJ Mermaid 2. These two devices sit at opposite ends of the audio spectrum, designed for fundamentally different environments and use cases. One is a precision instrument built for a quiet desk or mixing console, while the other is a rugged, ergonomic tool built to withstand sweat, motion, and the chaotic energy of an active lifestyle.
• Audeze MM-100: Offers industry-leading planar magnetic precision with an open-back design for immersive sound; trade-off is its bulky over-ear form factor and lack of isolation makes it unsuitable for outdoor activity.
• CVJ Mermaid 2: Delivers powerful, tuned bass with a secure loop-over-ear design perfect for motion; trade-off is its closed-in, in-ear profile which limits the natural soundstage found in larger headphones.
• Who picks Audeze: Audio professionals and home listeners who prioritize absolute sonic detail and comfort during long, seated sessions.
• Who picks CVJ: Active individuals and gamers who need a reliable connection that won't fall out while jogging, lifting weights, or playing on the go.
The Audeze MM-100 is not a casual listener's headphone; it is a professional tool crafted for those who demand to hear every nuance in a recording. Built with massive 9-centimeter planar magnetic drivers, this unit pushes the boundaries of what is possible in its class, delivering pinpoint precision and ultra-low distortion. The sound signature is tuned by Grammy award-winning engineer Manny Marroquin, ensuring that the emotional intent of the artist comes through without coloration or artificial boost. This is not about pumping up the bass to make things "fun"; it is about hearing exactly what was recorded, from the subtle breath of a vocalist to the decay of a cymbal.
Its construction speaks to durability and longevity. The chassis combines magnesium aluminum and steel, creating a frame that feels premium and substantial without being unwieldy. You get gel-filled leather earpads that cradle your ears, paired with an adjustable suspension strap that distributes weight evenly. This design allows for hours of fatigue-free listening, making it ideal for long mixing sessions, deep gaming marathons, or simply enjoying a full album at home. The open-back design means sound escapes slightly, creating a wide, natural soundstage that mimics listening to speakers in a room rather than having sound trapped inside your ear canal.

However, this design choice creates a significant limitation for anyone looking to move around. Because it is an open-back headphone, it offers zero noise isolation. You will hear everything happening around you, and everyone around you will hear exactly what you are listening to. Furthermore, the physical footprint is large. Weighing in at 1.1 pounds, these are over-ear units that cover the entire ear. They fold flat for travel with a gig bag, but they are never truly "portable" in the way small earbuds are. If you try to wear these while running or walking outside, the wind noise alone would be overwhelming, and the lack of isolation would ruin your focus. This product is strictly for a controlled environment where you can sit still and listen.
In stark contrast, the CVJ Mermaid 2 is engineered for the person who refuses to compromise their music for their workout. These in-ear monitors utilize a 10mm dynamic driver with a beryllium crystal diaphragm, a combination that delivers incredibly fast transient response and high sensitivity. The tuning is distinctively bass-centric, using a passive low-pass network crossover to ensure rich, textured lows that drive rhythm without drowning out the mids. For someone working out, especially for running, this frequency response provides the motivation and energy that lighter, flatter sounds often lack. The clarity in the highs remains intact, so you don't lose the crispness of vocals or hi-hats even when the bass is thumping.
The physical design is where the Mermaid 2 truly shines for active users. The shell is made of 5-axis CNC aluminum alloy, giving it a sleek, double-layered hollowed-out look, but more importantly, it features an ergonomic over-ear loop design. This shape hooks securely behind the ear, preventing the earbuds from falling out even during vigorous jumps or sprints. The package includes multiple sizes of silicone ear tips, allowing you to find a seal that keeps the sound contained and blocks out ambient noise passively. This passive noise cancellation is crucial for safety and focus when you are outdoors, helping you tune into your playlist while staying aware of your surroundings through the air leakage inherent in the fit.
Connectivity is another area where the Mermaid 2 proves its utility for mobile use. It comes with a detachable, tangle-resistant silver-plated cable featuring both 3.5mm and 4.4mm plugs. This versatility means you can plug directly into a phone, a game console like the Switch or PS5, or a PC without needing extra adapters. The 4.1-foot length gives you enough slack to move freely, whether you are tying your shoes or stretching. While the build quality is robust, weighing only 257 grams total, the experience is entirely focused on convenience and reliability. You aren't carrying a heavy case or worrying about a fragile open-back cup breaking against a gym wall; you just clip them in and go.
• Best for battery life → Neither requires charging as both are wired, but the CVJ Mermaid 2 offers longer continuous play per charge cycle due to its higher sensitivity (108dB/mW) requiring less power from the source device compared to the Audeze MM-100.
• Best for running → CVJ Mermaid 2 is the only logical choice here; its secure loop-over-ear design and lightweight profile prevent slippage, whereas the Audeze MM-100 are physically impossible to use safely while jogging.
• Best for soundstage → Audeze MM-100 wins decisively with its open-back architecture, providing a wide, airy presentation that CVJ Mermaid 2 cannot match due to its sealed, in-ear nature.
• Best for bass impact → CVJ Mermaid 2 offers a warmer, punchier low-end tailored for modern genres and motivation, while Audeze MM-100 aims for neutral accuracy which may feel leaner to some listeners.
• Best for noise isolation → CVJ Mermaid 2 provides passive noise cancellation through its in-ear seal, blocking out gym noise or traffic; Audeze MM-100 leaks sound in both directions, offering zero isolation.
• Best for portability → CVJ Mermaid 2 fits in a pocket with no case needed, while Audeze MM-100 requires a dedicated soft cover gig bag to protect the large cups.
• Best for critical mixing → Audeze MM-100 is superior with its planar magnetic drivers and flat frequency response designed by a Grammy engineer, making it a professional standard.
• Best for gaming on consoles → CVJ Mermaid 2 has the universal compatibility with 3.5mm/4.4mm plugs for Switch and PS5, making it a plug-and-play solution for mobile gaming.
I would buy the CVJ Mermaid 2 if my primary goal was finding the best earbuds for running or any situation where I am moving. The Audeze MM-100 is an incredible piece of technology for a studio, but it fails completely in the real world when applied to fitness. For a runner, the secure fit, the bass-driven energy, and the ability to block out distracting wind noise are non-negotiable features that the heavy, open-back Audeze simply cannot provide. The Mermaid 2 balances performance with practicality, ensuring you stay connected to your music without the risk of losing your gear mid-stride. If you are buying a headphone for running, there is no contest: the CVJ Mermaid 2 is the clear winner.
No, the Audeze MM-100 are over-ear, open-back headphones designed for stationary use. They are too bulky, offer no noise isolation, and will not stay secure during movement, making them unsafe and uncomfortable for running.
Yes, the CVJ Mermaid 2 feature a secure loop-over-ear design specifically engineered to prevent slipping. Combined with the included variety of silicone ear tips, they provide a stable fit ideal for high-intensity activities.
The CVJ Mermaid 2 offer significantly better isolation due to their in-ear design and passive noise cancellation capabilities. The Audeze MM-100 are open-back, meaning sound leaks out and ambient noise enters freely.
Absolutely, the Mermaid 2 comes with a detachable cable featuring both 3.5mm and 4.4mm connectors, ensuring seamless compatibility with devices like the Xbox, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
