South Korea is to open competitive bidding for its second round of hydrogen power generation auctions in October, with the aim of contracting 650GWh of electricity produced from what is most likely to be polluting grey H2.

Managers at the Korean Power Exchange (KPX), which is responsible for running the auctions, convened yesterday (Thursday) to agree the amount of electricity up for tender for delivery in 2025, and to confirm minor adjustments to the awards process.

Co-firing of up to 50% hydrogen in natural-gas turbines, and up to 20% ammonia in coal-fired power plants, is permitted, but around 70MW of the capacity tendered in the last auction was reported to be met by fuel cells supplied by Korean conglomerate Doosan.

Debt securities issued by the public sector, such as government bonds and bonds issued by public corporations, are issued via the direct distribution method. KTBs are issued regularly to Primary Dealers and Preliminary Primary Dealers through the electronic auction system that is part of BOK Wire+. In these cases, competitive auction is the usual issuance method, in particular when involving institutional investors. KTB issuances are the representative examples of competitive auction.

Before August 2000, KTB issuance was conducted by multi-price (conventional) auction. Since then, the single-price (dutch) auction has been used for the issuance of KTBs. Non-financial special purpose bonds also tend to be issued in this manner. The differentiated auction method was introduced in September 2009 to fix the problems inherent to the multi-price auction method, as well as those using single-price auction.

Seoul Auction and K Auction, the two major auction houses that account for about 80 to 90% of the Korean art auction market, held five major auctions in the first quarter of 2023, raising a total of about 25.3 billion KRW (approximately $19 million). As mentioned above, this is a decrease of about 58% compared to the same period in 2022. The total number of artworks sold was 513, a decrease of 52.4% from 782 in the same period last year.

The average bid rate was approximately 67.3%, down 15% from 2022 (approximately 82.6%). This was even lower compared to 2021 when the economic situation was even more bleak and uncertain. In the first quarter of 2023 in Korea, there were a total of 69 auctions, including nine major and 60 online auctions, with an average successful bid rate of less than 50%.

Meanwhile, Korean antique art, such as Korean paintings, ceramics, calligraphy, and wooden furniture, showed growth potential in the local art market. During the first quarter, 69.8% of the artworks sold at nine major auctions held by five auction houses were antiques and Korean paintings.

The global art market saw a 3% increase in total sales in 2022 and a 1% increase in volume. It showed a solid sales record only at the high end of the market. In the primary market, top artists accounted for 30% of the total sales and also demonstrated a strong sales record in the auction market.

There is much work to be done to address this issue in the Korean art market. On their websites, auction houses only display successful bids while concealing the results of failed bids to cover the poor performance. Galleries report sales generated by participating in art fairs separately from gallery sales, thereby misleading the size of the entire art market in Korea.

The monitoring of pathogens of fishery auction markets is important to obtain safe fishery products regarding hygiene and sanitation. In this study, aerobic, coliform, Escherichia coli, and Vibrio cholerae were monitored in the fishery products and environmental samples obtained from fishery auction markets.

The fishery products (flounder, octopus, skate, rock cod, sea bass, snail, monkfish, flatfish, comb pen shell, corb shell, conger eel, hairtail, croaker, and pilchard) were placed in filter bags, and the environmental samples (samples from the water tanks at the fishery auction markets, seawater from the fishery distribution vehicles, ice from wooden or plastic boxes, and surface samples from wooden and plastic boxes used for fish storage) were collected. Aerobic bacteria, E. coli, and coliform in the samples were enumerated on aerobic count plates and E. coli/coliform count plates, respectively. For V. cholerae O1 and V. cholerae non-O1 quantification, most probable number (MPN)-PCR analysis was performed.

The monitoring of fishery auction markets for pathogens is essential for obtaining safe fishery products with regard to hygiene and sanitation. Therefore, the fishery auction markets in the West Sea, S. Korea were monitored in this study. Microbial contamination was evaluated by detecting V. cholerae and other hygiene indicator microorganisms in environmental samples from the fishery auction markets and the fishery products harvested in the West Sea.

In conclusion, V. cholerae can be detected in fall and can cross-contaminate between the fishery products and environmental factors such as water and storage boxes in the fishery auction markets. Therefore, food safety practices at fishery auction markets such as the frequent replacement and decontamination of storage facilities and tools should be performed to prevent foodborne disease outbreaks. Overall, the results of this study may be useful in establishing food safety practices for fishery auction markets in S. Korea.

Marbling score (MS) is related to beef auction price (AP) in Korea, but how these relate to marbling texture (i.e. number and distribution of marbling particles [MPs]) is not known. We examined relationships among carcass traits, carcass AP, and image analysis marbling texture traits. In experiment 1, carcass data and longissimus thoracis (LT) were obtained from Korean cattle steers reared under similar feeding conditions. MS, quality grade (QG), and AP were related (P < 0.001) to numbers of coarse MPs and fine MPs and fineness index. In experiment 2, LT images photographed at a slaughterhouse were used in regression analysis within individual QG classes (QGs: 1 [middle], 1+, and 1++ [best]). AP was related (P < 0.001) to numbers of coarse MPs and fine MPs and fineness index in both QGs 1+ and 1++ but not in QG 1. Overall, several marbling texture traits were related to AP, but both MS and QG were more strongly related to AP.
