VAULTED CEILING CONVERSION:
If the area to be vaulted is a conventionally raftered roof; a new ridge will need to be installed to transfer the weight of the roof down to the foundation. Generally speaking, the longer the span you're wanting to vault, the stronger the ridge will need to be.
Under-framing will often be needed in order to get the required insulation R-values to meet the required Energy Codes.
If your house has an existing trussed roof then the process is quite different as trussed roofs don't utilize a ridge.
To vault a trussed roof they first be re-engineered. Once that's done we now have a template showing where to cut the existing structural members and install the new sections to make the new vaulted outline/profile.
Gussets are cut and installed at the spots where new components attach to the original truss.
