Dr. Athanasios Tsipis is an Assistant Professor of Digital Culture in the Dept. of Digital Media and Communication, Faculty of Information Science & Informatics, Ionian University (IU), Argostoli, Greece, and a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Dept. of Audio and Visual Arts, IU, Corfu, Greece. He received his B.Sc. in Informatics in 2015 with a specialization in the field of “Information Systems” from the Dept. of Informatics of IU. Two years later, in February 2017, he received his M.Sc. in Informatics with honors in the scientific direction of “Information Technology and Information Systems”, for which he was awarded a full scholarship due to academic excellence. In January 2021, Athanasios completed his doctoral studies, receiving his Ph.D. in Informatics with honors at the aforementioned Department. His Ph.D. dissertation is titled “Network Resource Optimization in Cloud Computing Environments”. As a Ph.D. student, Athanasios was employed at the Directorate of Informatics & Networks as well as the Dept. of Music Studies of the IU, and has contributed to the assistance and teaching of a number of courses for the Dept. of Informatics and the Dept. of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpretation. Since 2015, Athanasios has been a research member of the “Networks, Multimedia and Security Systems Laboratory” (NMSLab). During this time, he has been involved in several R&D projects, funded by both EU and national resources, and has co-authored a series of similar research proposals and scientific publications. In 2021, he was with the Dept. of Informatics, IU, as an Academic Scholar in the subject area of "Data and Information Analysis" while, in 2022, he was with the Dept. of Tourism, IU, as an Academic Scholar in the subject area of "Applications and Services of New Technologies in Tourism". In the past, he has also served as an Adjunct Lecturer at the Dept. of Digital Media and Communication and at the Dept. of Environment of IU as well as a Scientific Associate for the Region of Ionian Islands. He is a reviewer of numerous international conferences and scientific journals in the area and a guest editor for special issues targeted at the intersection of networking and immersive systems. In 2021, he was the recipient of the best paper award from the 26th IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications (ISCC) whereas, in 2024, he was awarded the best paper award from the 5th Pan-Hellenic Conference on Digital Cultural Heritage (Euromed 2023).

Research Interests

His primary research interests include (but are not limited to): Immersive Environments, Extended Reality (Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality), 3D Technologies, Virtual Museums and Exhibitions, Interaction Design (User Interface and User Experience), Educational Software and Serious Games, Video Games and Gamification, Cloud Gaming, Interactive Applications, Internet Technologies and Mobile Applications, and Artificial Intelligence and Performance Analysis, particularly in the fields of Digital Cultural Heritage, Digital Art, Digital Museology, Cultural Informatics, Architectural Heritage, Metaverse, and Emerging or Future Generation Systems.
