THE hundred foot journey is one of those movies which satisfy every aspect and every individual, filled with comedy, love, romance, intrigue, suspense and most importantly life lessons. Here is a story from it.

I'm not a big film watcher, much preferring a book. I think that books provide so much more detail for your imagination than films, although One Hundred Foot journey has become a firm favorite of mine.

After serving an apprenticeship under Chef Mallory, Hassan and one of his sisters move to Paris to set up their own very successful restaurant. It's at this point that the film deviates from the film again cutting Hassan's whole journey to Paris short which is an essential part of his story. His friendship with chefs and critics, built with he suspects the help of Madame Mallory, are completely omitted.

Parents need to know that Lasse Hallstrom's The Hundred-Food Journey follows the journey of Hassan (Manish Dayal), a young and extremely talented chef, and his/his family's culture clash with rival restaurateur Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). The many mouth-watering food scenes are often accompanied by wine, and there are some scenes in which one character starts to drink a bit more heavily (to suggest depression). Two brief moments feature some violence (including one in which men throw fire bombs) -- one of which causes a sad death. There are also a few romantic kisses and suggestions of intimacy and language along the lines of "bloody." Set in France, The Hundred-Foot Journey tells the story of the Kadam family who move to a small town in France from India after a particularly traumatic event, to start a new life and open their restaurant Maison Mumbai. In the process, they are confronted by Madame Mallory (played by Helen Mirren), owner of a Michelin-star rated French restaurant Le Saule Pleureur across the street, who is intent on shutting down their restaurant, complaining at the outset that "curry is curry." Over the course of the movie, the audience is taken on a breathtaking journey of what it means to follow your dreams, unexpected love, mutual understanding, and the universal power of food to connect us all to what really matters. Filming the movie in St. Antonin-Noble-Val, France seems very apt, because Benedictine monks settled the area early on, bringing with them the Benedictine charism of hospitality to all comers, strangers and foes. Hospitality in this case means not only preparing and serving food; it really means being open, welcoming, accepting. This hospitality, I feel, is really the metaphor around which this story revolves. Becoming hospitable in this sense requires journeying toward greater understanding and achieving humility, something very rare in these days. I believe we see this humility in many of the main characters at the end of the film, especially in Hassan when he realizes that success does not necessarily hinge on another Michelin star.

My life in the kitchen, in short, starts way back with my grand-father's great hunger. And that three-day ride atop the train, baking in the fierce sun, clinging for dear life as the hot iron chugged across the plains of India, was the unpromising start of my family's journey. Grandfather never liked to talk about those early days in Bombay, but I know from Ammi, my grandmother, that he slept rough in the streets for many years, earning his living delivering tiffin boxes to the Indian clerks running the back rooms of the British Empire.
