Colloquial Talks in Mathematics Teaching Science

The European University ATHENA, in collaboration with the International Relations Office of the Hellenic Mediterranean University, and the Capacity Building project Innovative Teaching Education in Mathematics, is thrilled to announce a new series of colloquial talks on how to teach Mathematics. The main objective of this series of invited lectures is to show new pedagogies, and new technologies that can make mathematics more exciting and more engaging for the students. We aim to provide 'life' in mathematics teaching. The colloquial talks envision to motivate discussion among university teachers, researchers, and high school teachers, on mathematics education from the viewpoint of university mathematics.

Mathematics is all around us. Mathematics has helped us to model Covid-19 . Governments worldwide rely on mathematics to forecast the epidemic and to understand social issues like vaccine hesitancy. Mathematics is a universal language that helps us to communicate. However, how we teach them sometimes generates doubts among the students about their purpose in their studies. We urgently need to change this.

In this series of colloquial talks, starting in October 2022, experts in the field of teaching Mathematics will present fascinating research on the following topics:

  • How mathematics addresses the world's most pressing challenges.

  • Massive Open Online Courses to support teaching mathematics.

  • Digital tools and software for teaching mathematics.

  • The role of formative feedback in teaching mathematics.

  • AI for more personalised teaching mathematics.

  • The gamification element in teaching mathematics.

  • EduScrum for teaching mathematics.

  • Learning theories about mathematics.

  • Addressing issues during the transition from secondary to tertiary level in mathematics.

European projects and initiatives in mathematics teaching. The colloquial talks are also supported by the Erasmus Plus Cooperation Partnership projects: MATHDIGGER, and PYTHAGORAS that HMU is part of.
