For my BA Graduation project I chose to design a Maritime Center. It is located in İnciraltı/İzmir and consists of an exhibition, two pavilions, an amphitheater and outdoor gathering spaces. They all cover approximately 10.000 sqm of area.
Accessibility, Sustainability, Usage of Local Materials, Connection with the Site, and İzmir being a port city. These are the 5 major aspects that I considered while designing my Maritime Center.
Initial design idea of an anchor is still visible on the final layout. The programs are exhibition, cafe, shop, labaratory, multipurpose hall, library, offices and storages
Having a strong relationship with the sea was the ultimate goal and the design achieves that in many ways. Distinctive architectural elements, as well as the layout plan with indoor/outdoor connections, offer a very beautiful experience for the visitors.
Preserving trees and the surrounding elements was one of the priorities of my design. I wanted to make the complex as realistic and environmentally-friendly as possible.
There is an 8m high waterfall in the center which has a significant role for the project. It will be running for couple hours of a day. It is visible from both inside and outside thus has a connector role.
Contemporary pavilion is made of crystalized glass. So with the sun light it will create an illusion of water underneath. I though that might be a nice and interesting way to approach to maritime exhibition.
