The playable character of Asterigos (that's pronounced AST-terr-reh-gohs) is a young woman named Hilda, a warrior of the Northwind Legion who travels to the cursed city of Aphes to find her missing father & tribemates. Aphes has been stuck in time for centuries, due to the titular Curse of the Stars. As Hilda seeks out her brethren, the history of Aphes & its curse slowly comes to the forefront, and Hilda's actions will unavoidably shape its fate.
But as you progress through the game, you'll learn how Minerva is tied to the titular Asterigos curse, along with several other characters crucial to the cursed city's history. Perhaps also inspired by the budding Souls-like genre, much of Asterigos' storyline is delivered through in-game diary entries and notes (probably too many notes, to be honest), though standard dialogue sequences are also commonplace. It admittedly took a while to grow on me, but piecing together the mystery surrounding Aphes, experiencing opposing perspectives and clashing factions, the story actually managed to invest my attention. Sort of.
One of the more bothersome elements of Asterigos is how it handles its quest design. There are numerous sidequests throughout Hilda's adventure involving other residents of the cursed city, and these quests are of varying styles and quality. Hilda even has her own journal that takes note of these sidequests, of which I'm of two minds. Her journal is much more realistic & diegetic compared to most RPGs, with Hilda's notes written in first-person with her own thoughts (and drawings) on the events that transpire. This is actually really nice to see, and I much prefer it over the commonly seen gamey checklist-like quest logs that are often otherwise found in the genre.
Asterigos: Curse of the Stars stars a young warrior called Hilda who makes her way to the city of Aphes in search of her father, who embarked with his Northwind Legion on an expedition to the city, and has been missing for some time. The once prosperous city has been cursed, turning its inhabitants immortal and preventing them from leaving. Determined to find her father and his legion, Hilda agrees to collaborate with the Adherents led by Minerva, who have taken shelter under the city to rid the city of the curse in exchange for the Echo Stones that can help Hilda save her father.
The absolute worst feature in Asterigos: Curse of the Stars is its level design. Following a short, straightforward trek through nature to reach the cursed city, Hilda will explore the labyrinthine streets of Aphen and other nearby locations, and it's here that the issue becomes evident. Level design seems to lack direction, as it's basically a combination of different paths that often lead nowhere. When they lead to something, it's usually to some meager treasure, like materials to upgrade weapons, or Salves, healing items that are available in limited quantities outside of shops. Some extra gear can be found exploring locations that let players further customize Hilda's abilities, but they do not change things too much and don't make exploration feel any more rewarding.
Those who are looking to pick this up simply due to the Souls-like combat features should note that this game focuses heavily on storytelling via cutscenes, text box dialogue, and item descriptions. You can, of course, choose to skip all of them, but the overarching narrative is actually worth listening to. There is a bit too much text to read though, as most of the optional dialogue are not voice acted and you get a ton of lore dump. As previously mentioned, you play as Hilda, a warrior from the Northwind Region, who enters a cursed city named Aphes. Along your journey, you meet a plethora of Gods and forgotten races to solve a mystery that transcends beyond you and your father. It was nice to see names such as Minerva and Eumenides as characters in the game.
The key hook is that Hilda is already an experienced warrior proficient in six different weapons. She can equip any two at the same time to switch quickly between weapon types as she explores the cursed city of Aphes.
This variety of weapon combat is much needed as the day to day exploration of the cursed city is riddled with re-spawning enemies (after a death) that often behave, act and are placed in the same areas. This makes exploring repetitive and combat a routine affair that fails to require the strategy that Souls games are famous for.
Storywise the plot veers towards some Daddy-issue tropes in its narrative but I did find the class system and cursed city quite interesting as I was exploring. There are elite elders who looked down on everyone and pulled strings until everything collapsed and now they need help and realize they were not as great and generous as they thought.

Along the way, Hilda will go up against many demons, cultists, and other terrible monsters with swords, shields, daggers, hammers, and magical items. But despite that focus on violence, there's very little bloodshed and gore. The game has a very strong moral center with Hilda, the main character, constantly showcasing empathy, compassion, and a willingness to work with others to rid Aphes of its terrible curse. There's also a focus on family and community as Hilda builds bonds with dependable, trustworthy people to save her father and the rest of the Legion. While the controls are mostly solid and responsive, a bothersome jumping mechanic does tend to the moment-to-moment gameplay in its tracks.

She soon discovers graves belonging to two members of the Legion, quickly understanding that things are more dire than they initially seemed. Forced to contend with ancient beings and malevolent monsters, Hilda comes face to face with Aphes' darkest secrets. With the odds against her, can Hilda find the Northwind Legion before they're lost to history forever?
