Assistive Technology with Mrs. S.

Using Digitally-Based Assistive Technology in a Blended Learning Environment

About Me

This coming September with be my 18th year in the teaching profession. How did that happen so quickly? For the first 12 years I was a classroom teacher, teaching Grades 4, 5, 6 and 7. During this time, I also completed a Master of Education Degree and took a few courses in Special Education.

When I moved from Ontario to British Columbia, I suddenly found new opportunities that I never expected. I thought I would always be a classroom teacher, but there were plenty of Learning Assistance jobs available. I ended up loving the work! It has been really fulfilling to support students, collaborate with classroom teachers and interact with support staff.

Teaching During a Pandemic

As if it wasn't challenging enough to do all of the above, Special Education teachers now have to think even more critically about how best to serve the needs of their students. When you think of our most vulnerable students, it can be worrisome. If schools close, even partially, how will students access the assistive technology and supports they so desperately require?
