Round 7 - Daytona

Ronnie Kotz captures his first overall win of the season and first since last seasons British Grand Prix at Silverstone edging out the VW of Caleb Sellner by 0.353 seconds.

Jeff Lovell secured his fourth career pole and first since Chrismas Eve of 2018 at Tsukuba. Kotz got the jump and led from the drop of the green which included the only full-course caution of the race, a lap one Brad Hill blown engine. Multiple cars made contact at turn one at the start with Hill receiving the biggest hit. He made it onto the oval on the back-half of the circuit only to have his engine go. When the race went back to green, a five car pack of MX-5's featuring Kotz, Tom Athon, Jeff Lovell, Odise Adams Jr., and Nicholas Morelli, generated a small gap. Another five car pack formed closely behind with the VW's of Brian Szabelski, Caleb Sellner, Ben Schaut, Johnny Bell, and the MX-5 of Jonathan Rodriguez.

In the lead pack, Morelli had worked his way up to third overall by lap 9 and the lead VW's, now within one second of each other, was now a pack of three as Bell lost the draft and began to drop away. Sellner got by Schaut for second in-class by lap ten and began his hunt for Szabelski.

The lead cars all pitted on lap twelve and the VW's took the lead with Sellner on Szabelski's bumper. It only took three laps for Sellner to use the draft to get by Szabelski. Among the MX-5's, Athon managed to get out ahead of Kotz and the two would trade spots over the next few laps. By lap 15, the MX-5's caught the VW's and Athon took the overall lead.

After the last series of pit stops, the VW's cycled to the front with Sellner in the lead. In similar fashion, the MX-5's were able to chase them down in just a few laps. Kotz took the overall lead with just three laps left. Sellner was able to stay ahead of Athon for second overall and put a car between himself and Szabelski for the VW race. At the line, Kotz beat out Sellner and Athon by just over half-a-second. Szabelski finished another eight tenths back.

The final podium spots in each class were taken by Ben Schaut (VW) who finished fifth overall thirteen seconds behind the leader and Odise Adams Jr. who finished sixth overall sixteen seconds behind Kotz.

Kotz maintains his massive points lead among the MX-5's, but it is now Athon who occupies second in-class as he leaps Adams Jr. Sellner's class win moves him to the lead in the VW class, eight points ahead of Jake Johannsen. Overall, Kotz' lead is 46 points over Sellner.

Round 6 - Charlotte

After missing that past three races, Jake Johannsen returns to victory lane at Charlotte. The 2018 Roval lived up to expectations with four cautions during the race leaving six cars more than ten laps down.

Johannsen put his car on the overall pole more than 0.6 seconds ahead of the MX-5 of Jose I. Soria and almost a full second ahead of the third overall VW of Caleb Sellner. It took less than a lap for the backstretch chicane to claim its first victim. The VW of Christopher Feldhaus went too deep into the chicane and the cold tires were unable to keep the car out of the outside wall. It did not take long for the second caution of the race. The field barely made it into the infield portion of the track as the VW of Alexis Walker took a lunge underneath the MX-5 of Odise Adams Jr. Walker clipped the curb and collided with Adams sending both around. Cars swerved across the track to avoid the incident, but the MX-5 of Harry Grindell was unable to evade Adams and made contact. In a separate incident, the VW of Caleb Sellner received damage at the backstretch chicane which caused him to spin and hit the oval wall approaching the final chicane.

The race went back to green, with Soria in the lead, but soon after, the third caution of the race came. The MX-5 of Brad Hill clipped the wall entring the oval causing significant damage which caused him to make heavy impact with the tire barrier once he got to the backstretch chicane. The ensuing yellow so the leader, Soria, inexplicably spin while trying to catch the safety car causing a collision with Johannsen. The ensuing pitstops shuffled the VW of Walker to the front. The race went green again, but much like the incident on lap one, Walker made heavy contact with the tire barriers and outside wall at the backstrectch chicane. The race went back to green...again, but this time it would stay green for the rest of the race. Johannsen would gradually pull away from the MX-5 of Ronnie Kotz. Johannsen suffered damage of his own which erased a 20 second gap to Kotz. The gap at the line was only 3.9 seconds.

The battle for second among the VWs was intense for the final ten laps. Ben Schaut erased a substantial gap to Johnny Bell and the two were within a second of each other in the final stage of the race. The two making contact three separate times in the final four laps. Bell was unable to hold Schaut behind as he bounced off of the curbs in the final chicane. Schaut's finish capped off a stellar drive after starting 13th overall to finish third behind Johannsen and Kotz.

Simon Erpelding finished fifth overall and second in the MX-5 class one lap down. Terry Neumaster survived the chaos to finish seventh overall and third in-class.

With their wins, Johannsen jumps Sellner to retake the VW lead and second overall, while Kotz increases his overall lead and stretches his MX-5 lead to more than double that of second place Odise Adams Jr.

Next week, A:SRC tackles the Daytona Road course. Last season, Jake Johannsen took the overall win beating Brian Szabelski to the line by ten seconds. Michael Bolden took the MX-5 win beating Jeff Lovell and Ronnie Kotz to the line. The three were separated by 0.083 seconds.

Round 5 - Spa

Caleb Sellner holds off a hard charging Brain Szabelski to pick up his third overall win in a row. Both VW drivers didn't have luck on their side to start the race as a caution at the start caused a mix-up with timing and scoring. Odise Adams Jr. spun his MX-5 in the chicane coming to green and collected a handful of cars, including the VWs of Johnny Bell and Ben Schaut and the MX-5 of Harry Grindell. All cars sustained damage, but Schaut came out with the least of it. The ensuing yellow saw multiple penalties, but the nature of the long pace lap all but nullified them.

As the race went back to green, Ronnie Kotz took the overall lead while the two fastest qualifiers, Szabelski and Sellner, found themselves sitting eleventh and twelfth, respectively. Kotz pitted on lap ten and Sellner took over the lead and would lead the rest of the way. Szabelski had a harder time making his way through traffic and found himself more than 14 seconds behind Sellner. As the two took the white flag, the gap was down to 0.818 seconds. Szabelski got a great run as the two approached Pouhon, but he could not capitalize as they came upon lapped traffic. Sellner would go on to win by 0.393 seconds. Ben Schaut had a masteful recovery drive to finish third in-class and fourth overall.

Ronnie Kotz cruised to the MX-5 victory beating Simon Erpelding to the line by 40 seconds. It was Erpelding's best career MX-5 finish. Tom Athon was running as high as fourth overall but his race came off the rails as he and Brad Hill made contact in the chicane on lap five causing substantial damage to his machine. Later in the race, he and the VW of Johnny Bell got together at the chicane further prolonging both of their hardships. Nicholas Morelli would finish on the final step of the MX-5 podium by finishing seventh overall seven seconds behind Erpelding.

Kotz maintains his overall lead and massive 77 point lead in-class. With his third win in a row, Sellner moves into second overall and takes over the VW lead.

Round 2 - Okayama

Jake Johannsen makes it two in a row with a win at Okayama. It was a dominant race for the VWs as they took seven of the top ten positions. In qualifying, Jetta's locked out the front two rows with all four separated by only 0.072 seconds. In fact, second through fourth were separated by a miniscule 0.006 seconds.

Johannsen was able to get the jump at the start as the front four VWs were able to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Caleb Sellner settled in to second while Johnny Bell was able to pip Joe Marlin at the start. Things changed on lap five as the MX-5's of Harry Grindell and Robert Elder barely touched in the heavy braking zone of Hair Pin. The contact sent Elder sharply across the nose of Grindell and into the wall, essentially ending his night. The caution saw the front five cars, including MX-5 leader Ronnie Kotz, dive into the pits. Alexis Walker would stay out and take the lead as the race went back to green. The Canadian was able to pull a six-second gap as the leaders tried working their way through the field. At one point, second through eleventh were separated by just under five seconds. By lap 14, Sellner and Johannsen were able to get past Walker to resume their battle out front. Johannsen made an early stop on lap 18 and that proved to be the difference. Once the pitstop cycle played out, he was almost ten seconds clear of Sellner. Johannsen would go on to win by just over nine seconds. Johnny Bell, after a late race surge, finished another seven seconds back to claim third overall and third in class.

Ronnie Kotz picked up his second class win of the season by finishing fourth overall. His closest competitor during qualifying, DJ Alessandrini, was unable to make it to the grid. Kotz was on his own until the caution came out, but found himself in a three-way battle with Odise Adams Jr. and Tom Athon. Athon lost touch in a handful of laps after the race went back to green and Adams Jr. had an unforuante incident while pitting on lap 20. He caught the grass in the pit lane and careened off the right side barrier causing significant damage. From there, Kotz cruised. Tyler Burns, in his first A:SRC race since October 1, 2018, finished second in class. Brad Hill take his career best class finish to claim the final step on the MX-5 podium.

Johannsen maintains his overall and VW points lead over Kotz who stays atop the MX-5 standings. Burns vaults to second in MX-5 standings with his second place run.

Next week A:SRC heads to Silverstone for the first ever race on the Historic Grand Prix Circuit.
