Founder of Aspen Education Collective
Melani Buchanan Farmer’s story begins in Albuquerque, where she grew up in a family deeply connected to education and service. With a mother who taught in Albuquerque Public Schools and a family legacy of military service, she learned early the values of perseverance, resilience, and community commitment. Today, she carries those lessons forward through every facet of her work.
Melani has dedicated over two decades to education—as a classroom teacher, district leader, professor, and nonprofit founder. She holds a PhD in Transformative Studies from the California Institute of Integral Studies, as well as master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the University of New Mexico. Her work in schools has ranged from supporting cultural equity to leading wellness initiatives, always with the same mission: building systems where youth and families can thrive.
She founded Running505, a nonprofit mentoring and wellness program for youth, and BFit505 Burque CrossFit, a community-driven gym. In 2024, she launched Aspen Education Collective to bring her vision of transformative support to educators, schools, and communities nationwide.
Behind her accomplishments is a story of resilience, shaped not only by professional challenges but also by personal relationships. As a mother, spouse, and friend, Melani has found that the greatest lessons often come through navigating both joy and hardship. For her, resilience is not a single milestone but a practice—a continuing journey of growth, balance, and compassion.
Through Aspen Education Collective, Running505, and BFit505, Melani continues to empower educators, families, and young people. Her legacy is one of building spaces for connection, growth, and wellness—and modeling leadership that blends strength with vulnerability. She invites educators and partners to join her in reimagining what thriving communities can look like.
