As an international student, adapting to a different culture, academic expectations, and social environment can feel overwhelming at times. It’s completely natural to experience a mix of emotions—excitement, uncertainty, homesickness, or even self-doubt. That’s why I created the Therapy Worksheet for Asian International Students—to provide a supportive, structured space where students can reflect on their experiences, express their emotions, and discover ways to navigate this transition with confidence and resilience.
This worksheet serves as a practical tool for counselors working with Asian international students, offering guided self-reflection and coping exercises tailored to their unique experiences. It encourages students to explore differences between their home and host cultures, express emotional challenges, identify support systems, and develop personalized coping strategies.
Extensive research highlights the essential role of culturally responsive support in helping international students overcome challenges and flourish in their new environments. Pendse and Inman (2017) analyzed 34 years of international student-focused counseling research, highlighting the widespread impact of acculturative stress and the underutilization of counseling services due to stigma, lack of culturally responsive approaches, and unfamiliarity with mental health resources. Further, Wang et al. (2012) conducted a longitudinal study on Chinese international students and identified four distinct acculturative adjustment patterns: consistently distressed, relieved, culture-shocked, and well-adjusted. Their findings emphasized that factors such as self-esteem, problem-solving appraisal, and balanced social support networks significantly influenced students' ability to cope with cultural transitions. With these insights in mind, I hope this worksheet serves as a helpful tool, offering guidance, reassurance, and practical strategies to make this journey smoother and more empowering.
