St Michael & All Angels, Ashton-on-Ribble with St Mark, Preston
In the autumn of 2019 a member of local Armed Forces Veterans gardening project "Dig In" re-created a lost war memorial to over one hundred and fifty men from the Dick, Kerr Factory on Strand Road.
The original memorial was situated in the Walled Garden in Ashton Park but "went missing" without trace. Fortunately a photograph survived and from this Clive Marshall, was able to engrave the men’s details on to wood panels.
Clive’s work was supported with a National Lottery grant from the Ashton Remembers Project based at St Michael’s Church.
The panels were dedicated at a Remembrance service at St Michael’s Church, Ashton on Sunday 10 November 2019. Churchwarden Stephen Davies praised Clive's remarkable piece of work and looked forward to seeing the memorial restored to its rightful place in the Park.
Notes:
The famous Dick, Kerr Ladies football team was formed from ladies who took the place of men from the factory who joined up.
Ashton Park was given by the company as a memorial to the men
The Dig-In Northwest team is made up of people from the military community – both serving and veteran, and families. They are there to support each other by doing something practical that benefits others.
