The ASEM LLL Hub Regional Centre for South Asia was set up in December 2022 during the Chairship of Prof. Séamus O' Tuama's mission to promote Lifelong Learning in South Asia.
The ASEM LLL Hub Regional Centre for South Asia was set up in December 2022 during the Chairship of Prof. Séamus O' Tuama's mission to promote Lifelong Learning in South Asia.
South Asia does not lack lifelong learning in general and has strong traditional education and informal learning architectures, but the South Asian countries lack dedicated policies on lifelong learning and commitment to resources for the same. Systematic efforts to support the transition of traditional educational systems towards lifelong learning ecosystems can create a lot of value and inclusiveness in the region by recognising and valuing learning that occurs outside the traditional education systems. The ASEM LLL Hub Regional Centre for South Asia, thus, has a major role to provide inputs and support stakeholders for developing lifelong learning ecosystems in the region.

The ASEM LLL Hub Regional Centre for South Asia started its work by creating awareness about lifelong learning in South Asia and is now acting as a common platform to bring various stakeholders together for the promotion of lifelong learning in diverse ways. This type of initiative is unprecedented in South Asia, and gradually, stakeholders like educational institutions, civil society organisations, industry, philanthropists, and even state bodies are now partnering with the ASEM LLL Hub Regional Centre for South Asia.
The ASEM LLL Hub Regional Centre for South Asia started its work by creating awareness about lifelong learning in South Asia and is now acting as a common platform to bring various stakeholders together for the promotion of lifelong learning in diverse ways. This type of initiative is unprecedented in South Asia, and gradually, stakeholders like educational institutions, civil society organisations, industry, philanthropists, and even state bodies are now partnering with the ASEM LLL Hub Regional Centre for South Asia.
To develop lifelong learning ecosystems in the region, a specific strategy was required. The Centre thus developed a four-pronged strategy to build up a strong collaboration among diverse stakeholders willing to work in the region from within and outside the region; develop consortia for research and development; shape and influence policies through declarations, reports, briefs, advocacy material and the like; organise strategic partnership and networking initiatives aiming at analysing the needs and resource profiling of various stakeholders; and offer courses, internships and exchnage between Asia and Europe. The Centre has served as a model for the development of several lifelong learning centres in the region and beyond.
