Pigeon Street is a British cut-out animated children's television series, written by Michael Cole, originally shown on the BBC as part of its 'See-Saw' strand for pre-schoolers. There were two series comprising a total of 13 episodes that all debuted in 1981, with the first on February 10, 1981.
The shows featured the everyday adventures of a group of characters living on Pigeon Street, an area of flats and terraced housing in a British city, also home to several pigeons which appeared in each show but only occasionally featured in the plot.
The animation was created by Alan Rogers and Peter Lang of the Cut-Out Animation Co., who later went on to do a nursery rhyme series with similar animation called Rub-A-Dub-Dub. Voices were performed by George Layton and John Telfer.
Created by Joy Whitby, Play School debuted on BBC2 on April 21, 1964, aimed at preschool children. Originally broadcast on weekday mornings, it later acquired a mid-afternoon repeat on BBC1.
From September 19, 1983 the morning showing moved to BBC2 when BBC Schools programming moved to the channel. The afternoon repeat was scrapped in April 1985.
Despite the 1983 revamp, Play School maintained the same basic formula throughout its 24-year history. Changes to the BBC's children's programming led to its cancellation in 1988, when it was replaced by Playbus.
