In the first century CE two new religions flourished in the Roman Empire: Christianity, and the mystery cult of Mithras. While Christianity went on to spread throughout the world, Mithraism vanished into obscurity over the following centuries. Being a mystery cult, there are virtually no written records, and in deducing what it all was about, we have to rely on artefacts from temples and allusions by other authors.
Agilmar will give a survey over what we know (and presume) about this fascniating cult, and will present a recent (and tentative) theory which could shed light on the religion of "Killing the bull."
