Is Tumblr Worth The Trouble, Anymore?

January 08, 2019\\California, USA\\

It should go without saying but, I'll say it: The tumblr pornbot problem was RIDICULOUS!

Aside from the obviously, overt vulgarity often found in profile images, they were also very annoying. Spam on the internet in general has grown both more persistent and more lazy, if that's possible. They seem to attempt to engage much more often, yet, the percentage of "profile" descriptions that contain spelling errors and sentiments "lost in translation" only expose the illiteracy and/or blatant misuse of a translation app. There's no argument against. They've become more than an inconvenience.

Having acknowledged that, though, the recent "scorched earth" strategy employed by the staff over there has caused just as much inconvenience, if not more. Sure, a strong majority of users affected were just looking at porn but, there is another demographic being adversely affected.

More than that "niche" crowd, though, Tumblr has come dangerously close to destroying their relationship with half of the population.

Anyway, I miss the old format. Even with the "bots", it was the best place to explore different ideas of sexuality, art and culture. True, I mostly used the app to see nude pictures of models but, it wasn't for porn. Yet, all of the people like me, men and women alike who simply appreciate the beauty of the female form can't help but feel betrayed.

MANY of the reblogs on my profile were flagged for "inappropriate content" and maybe so much so, that even my profile and header have been deleted. (pictures of roses, btw) Even though I made every attempt to reblog only classy and tasteful content and preferably properly credited images, it appears that I've been lumped in with the hate-speech, fetish-porn and spam bots.

To an extent, I can't really be mad. I didn't own any copyright to the images (aside from the flower and abstract photography I tried to contribute with). I am aware that some of the accounts I follow, shared content from people who blatantly cropped out watermarks from content they didn't own (don't do that, btw).

I totally understand that something had to be done but, was this the right answer?

In one fell swoop, Tumblr has alienated independent models, sex workers, cam girls, lesbian and queer women, sex educators and art historians. All of it feels very anti-woman. I won't even get into the FOSTA/SESTA stuff, here.

Anyway, my question is for those of you who have just sucked it up and returned because, it's familiar. I followed a link on twitter that I posted a few months ago (of more flowers, mind you) and was greeted with a "This account may contain sensitive content" page, fairly enough. However, instead of being allowed to "acknowledge the risk" that I may see naked women and continue, my only option was to "Return to My Dashboard".

So, I logged in, reluctantly to find my profile images stripped and a warning that much of my content (reblogs) was flagged and only visible to me. Essentially, my entire presence...OUR entire presence has been eliminated from the internet. Even if you beg me for a link and I explicitly explain that you may be subject to a woman's nipple or worse and you agree and then, I send you that link, privately, you will only be greeted with the message that this account may as well have been deleted.

Apologies for the rant. Maybe, I was more upset about it than I thought.

So, is it worth it to go back?

If not, have you found anything else?

I've tried a new social app but, I'm not ready to share it as a viable replacement. As it stands, Twitter is the only app that comes close.

Cheers,
