Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami is a Japanese artist influenced by western and Japanese cultural art traditions. From a young age, his interest with Japanese animation and comics gave him the passion for art. Following the footsteps of Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst of the post-modern art movement, Murakami was inspired to create his own art movement coining the term “superflat.”

The concept of superflat comes from the Edo period, by artists like Jakuchū Itō, where the painter organizes the composition to focus on the viewer's eye movement through the painting. Superflat's reference to the flattened forms with dimensional properties that can be found in anime and manga. His work addresses wide-ranging topics both personal and political, including the history of fear, contemporary culture and the expansion of global consumerism. Murakami also uses superflat as a bridge due to the lack of distinction between high art, mass culture, and sub-cultures within Japanese society.

As a skilled artist with big ambitions, Murakami launched his own factory production team in 1996. With his team of artists, Murakami is able to create intricate and detailed works on a big scale and in a more diverse collection of media. Murakami's wide usage of media is noted for the use of exciting colors. Many of his collections are defined by his psychedelic and cute art style. His uses of motifs (smiling flowers, iconic characters, mushrooms and skulls) are recognizable throughout all his work. His unique art style, now a part of pop culture of today, allowed him to collaborate with popular celebrities and brands, such as Louis Vuitton, Off-White, Billie Ellish, and many more.
