In conjunction with the Around Hear concert series, during the school year Marji and Dan give free, weekly, individual violin and piano lessons to low-income Somervillians ranging from age 8-60+ in the Mystic Activity Center’s activity room, using the piano that Marji and Dan arranged to have donated to the Somerville Housing Authority.

This program has a growing waitlist. We are currently seeking funding to eventually expand—our student roster. Contact us to get on our waiting list, or to support this free lessons program!

"It's so awesome that we have piano lessons." – Dan's young piano student

"Playing piano makes me feel calm when I am grumpy." – Marji's piano student

"When I'm learning about music, it feels like nothing can get in my way." – Marji's violin student

Throughout the year, Around Hear resident and guest artists bring creative arts workshops and pop-up concerts to the Mystic Learning Center and The Welcome Project, both based in the Mystic Activity Center. The second season’s events included: an all-day creative writing workshop for adult ESOL students; an intro to ballroom dance for teens; and a music composition workshop for elementary-age youth. Funding willing and with continued encouragement from our community, we will create and share many more workshops, both for our partner organizations and for the public.
