The IHP programs coordinates with families and healthcare professionals to assist in identifying children that are at risk for developing a hearing condition or are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
Contacting families to identify next steps for evaluation.
Identifying local providers for additional testing.
Referring to early intervention programs.
Promoting family-to-family support.
The IHP facilitates the state’s EHDI program by providing follow-up to families with children between the ages of 0-3 that do not pass the newborn hearing screening. The program works with families and healthcare professions to ensure the child receives additional testing and is connected to early intervention services if identified with a hearing condition. All children should be screened by 1 month of age, receive diagnostic evaluation by 3 months of age if they do not pass the screening, and enroll in early intervention services by 6 months of age if identified with a hearing condition.
2-3 per 1,000 children are born Deaf or Hard of Hearing, 90% of these children have hearing parents.
