Arkansas School for the Deaf was established in 1849 and is the only school for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in the state of Arkansas and serves as the center for Deaf Education throughout the state. The mission of the Arkansas School for the Deaf is to empower Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing children to become highly effective communicators who are educated, motivated, and independent. At ASD, students are transformed into confident young people, inspired to achieve their goals, with the skills to succeed in a competitive world.
ASD is a fully accredited, tuition-free state public school that follows a state-mandated curriculum and provides individualized education to students from throughout Arkansas. The school also provides support for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in mainstream programs throughout the state, serves families of Deaf children from birth until school age through our outreach program, and hosts a comprehensive post-secondary program focusing on career and college readiness for. ASD is a bilingual community, in which people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and hearing learn and work together without language and communication barriers.

Birth to School-age/ Outreach
Our Statewide Services program supports families, providers and professional staff, and schools by providing unbiased services to improve the outcomes and opportunities for strong language development. Such services include regional audiology services, program development and intervention plan development based upon needs, early intervention services provided in the natural environment, mentoring/coaching, IEP development and consultation, classroom consults, and more. Early Childhood
ASD Early Childhood Center serves children ranging from 2 years old through 5 years. A leader in early intervention for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, this program provides a language rich environment where children are able to focus on communication skills, develop social skills, and prepare for kindergarten. Students thrive in this environment where they are supported by a collaborative team of experienced and highly trained teachers, ASL specialists, speech-language pathologists, audiologist, OT & PT, nursing staff, and more. K-12 Education
Arkansas School for the Deaf is a fully accredited, tuition-free, state public school. Career Readiness
The Arkansas Deaf Career Center (ADCC) supports career and transition learning, transition services, job placement and coaching, academic support for college and professional certification, and more. The K-12 Transition & Career Exploration Program supports students in embedding targeted career and transition learning goals into their educational curriculum and residential life. ADCC Job Placement and Coaching Program specializes in creating customized programs for Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults to move beyond finding a job to building a life-long career. In order to be eligible to attend ASD, a student must have a documented hearing loss, be a resident of Arkansas, and be between the ages of 2 to 21 years, on the first day of ASD’s academic school year.
American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual language. ASL is used predominantly in the U.S. and in many parts of Canada. ASD offers ASL classes to the community every on a trimester basis. The Arkansas School for the Deaf Foundation (ASDF) was established in 1992 and serves as a supporting organization for the Arkansas School for the Deaf by providing post-secondary scholarships for ASD programs.
