A resource for parents to be trained in how to advocate for their children and how to teach their children to advocate for themselves as they grow and reach independence.
A group that unify and amplify our individual voices to make a “unified collective voice” to advocate change or overcome difficulties faced by our children in the educational systems, and/or political issues.

Guide By Your Side (GBYS) Program
Guide By Your Side (GBYS) is a program from Hands & Voices (H&V)™ that provides Emotional support Technical assistance Coaching Networking Unbiased information GBYS provides unbiased support to families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. These parents work as “Guides” directly with families who have just learned of their child’s hearing condition, or who have older children and are in need of the unique support that comes from someone else who has walked this path and can share from direct experience and wisdom.
Arkansas H&V GBYS D/HH Guides
D/HH Guides are a diverse group of D/HH adults who compliment the work of Parent Guides by working alongside them by Sharing with children and families their unique life experiences Using technology (captioning services, microphone, etc.) Giving examples of how they navigate social situations Explaining how they developed their personal identity, etc.
Advocacy, Support, & Training (ASTra) Program
ASTra is a replicable Deaf and Hard of Hearing Educational Advocacy Program designed to provide support to parents and professionals with resources that focus specifically on D/HH issues in the Hands & Voices context: a commitment to unbiased support of families regardless of language and communication approaches used by their children and across the full continuum of educational placement options, so that every child who is D/HH has the opportunity to achieve his/her full potential.
Arkansas Hands & Voices supports all families with children who are Deaf / Hard of Hearing regardless of communication choice. We embrace parent and professional collaboration to enable Deaf / Hard of Hearing children to reach their full potential.
Arkansas Hands & Voices does not promote specific communication choice or methodologies. Instead, we embrace the need to improve educational outcomes for our children, and to embrace their quality of life. We focus on areas of interest that are common to all parents of Deaf or Hard of Hearing children.
Intentional Interactions for Parents with a Purpose
1. Limit background noise during play and teachable moments.
2. Point out new sounds and sound sources in the environment.
3. Narrate what you are doing and how you are feeling while interacting with your child (e.g., changing diaper, preparing meals, getting ready).
4. Make reading to your child 20 minutes each day part of your routine.
5. Develop play routines to consistently practice language and encourage social interaction (e.g., songs, fun greetings, and peek-a-boo).
6. Narrate what your child is doing during interactions and play.
7. Expand on communication attempts your child makes by repeating back their gesture(s), sound(s) or word(s) and adding to them.
8. After prompting your child with a comment or question, wait for them to respond.
9. Model or demonstrate the sound(s) or word(s) you would like your child to use.
10. Develop daily routines that are predictable and provide a foundation for repetitive exposure to language concepts and vocabulary.
