Gandhi My Father paints the picture of Gandhi's intricate, complex and strained relationship with his son Harilal Gandhi. From the onset, the two had dreams in opposite directions. Harilal's ambition was to study abroad and become a barrister like his father, while Gandhi hoped that his son would join him and fight for his ideals and causes in India.

Philip French of The Guardian called it "one of the most revealing and courageous movies ever to come out of India." He further wrote that "It will be an eye-opener to those whose knowledge of the Mahatma is limited to Richard Attenborough's epic biopic."[7] Taran Adarsh of IndiaFM gave the film 4 out of 5, writing, "As a cinematic experience, GANDHI MY FATHER unfolds in the most simplistic, but compelling manner. Since the director is talking history, he ought to do the balancing act well. He reproduces facts without resorting to cinematic liberties and at the same time, simplifies everything so that the viewer can decipher it well.[8]

About point-2 what I have to say is that most of the allegations against gandhi are taken from his own words. Which simply means that he himself has admitted to have committed those mistakes. In his autobiography, he has clearly mentioned that he would not be showing justice to his book if he states only good things about himself and conceal the bad things. He has tried to be most sincere in the narration of his autobiography and be utterly detached from himself and see himself as an outsider would do when preparing an unbiased biography. If he wanted he could have hidden all the mistakes and immoral activities of his life. He was always a man who tried to make a better person of himself. You can make all allegations about himself just because he has written everything about himself, whether good or bad, without hiding anything. he never believed he had attained the supreme position which he dreamt about in his continuous search for self realization. There were pitfalls. And he was never ashamed to admit his mistakes as a human being. And that is the greatness I see in him. In that way he is a great person. He had no shame in disclosing that he visited brothels with his friend in his youth or how sex-hungry he was with his wife and how he treated her as a sex-object instead of a human being, a woman. Later when in Indian politics, he realised how difficult it was to remain pure and without hypocrisy in politics, and as a politician, he had to apply political tactics to bring together the entire population of India, especially the hindus and muslims under a single umbrella.

Today, the name "Gandhi" is synonymous with nonviolence, civil disobedience, and Indian statehood. Along with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela, Mohandas Gandhi is one of the giants of last century's human rights struggle. Known by many as simply "Bapu" (Hindi for "father"), he is seen as more a symbol or an ideal than an actual human being with faults.

As series of incidents hit him due to mismatch of wavelength between him and his father, Harilal grows mild and under confident. Harilal misses direction and his plight goes worse with the death of his wife Gulab.

To begin with, there was no justification for Gandhi opposing Harilal's decision to get married. Again, a little research on the reason behind Harilal's rebellion against his father could have taken the film to another level.

More questions come to the fore as the film progresses and no reason is given for the growing distance between father and son, though there are enough about the Mahatma being more concerned about the nation's interest than his family.

The film also fails to explore the relationship between Gandhi and his other three children -- Manilal, Ramdas and Devdas -- and how they felt about their father's apparent abandonment of family responsibilities. Their relationship vis-a-vis Harilal is also left unexplored. What the script is more concerned about is the fact that both Gandhi and Harilal were right in their own ways.

Akshaye Khanna [Images] as Harilal is outstanding and his performance will tear you up, especially the part where he goes to meet his parents at a railway station. He gives his mother an orange but refuses to share it with his father, stating that Mahatma Gandhi is the Mahatma because of her.

Shefali Shah is brilliant as Kasturba. Her helplessness at her failure to bridge the growing gap between father and son is palpable. The scene where she goes to meet Harilal, who has converted to Islam, is commendable for her composed dialogue delivery.

The generation that follows a very successful father or mother can often be a monumental disappointment. This has proven true countless times in the United States, and GANDHI, MY FATHER shows that it can be true around the world.

Written and directed by Disha Noyonika Rindani, the film portrays the relationship between a father and a daughter. The story unfolds a day in the life of an 11-year-old schoolgirl and an awkward predicament she has to share with her father. The film also stars Bhamini Oza Gandhi in a pivotal role

For other movies based on the lives of notable religious/political leaders see: Seven Years in Tibet (the Dalai Lama), The Prince of Egypt (Moses), and The Greatest Story Ever Told (Jesus Christ). Another story that looks at the idea of passive resistance is Freedom Song.

Previous films on the Mahatma, like Richard Attenborough's Gandhi, Shyam Benegal's The Making of the Mahatma or the contemporary Lage Raho Munnabhai - which deals with Gandhian principles - did not go very deep into the personal life of the father of the nation.

"The film, I believe, has been able to play the balancing act of not portraying either Gandhiji or Harilal as the villain," he said. "We have not judged whether the characters are good or bad. The film attempts to sensitively narrate the story from Harilal's point of view. He is a son who is searching for his father."

Harilal Gandhi is shown to be a person who was never afraid to voice his opinion in front of the Mahatma but was overshadowed by his father. He had at one point embraced Islam as a rebellion against his father but reconverted to Hinduism later.

"The film focuses on Harilal's point of view, what he thinks of having a father like the Mahatma. He is a man overshadowed by the persona of Gandhiji, who loved his family members for sure. But he loved his country much more. It was through Mahatma's personal tragedy and sacrifice that the nation won its freedom," said Feroz.

As Bapu has inspired millions of people across the world, several filmmakers have made movies motivated by the life of Mahatma Gandhi. His teachings have made a crucial contribution towards India's freedom struggle as well as guided many lives.

''People under 30 don't know who Gandhi is,'' said Mr. Antonowsky of the man who has been called the father of modern India. ''We must make grass-roots mid-America aware of who this man was.''

In order to inspire people, various films on the Mahatma's life have been produced, and Gandhi Jayanti is an occasion to reflect on his life and legacy. Here are 7 movies that will take you on a journey through his life, which you may watch with your family as you celebrate Gandhi Jayanti.

From documentaries to biopics, we're ranking the best movies about Mahatma Gandhi. The Indian civil rights activist has been depicted numerous times in film and TV, but this list only features movies where Mahatma Gandhi is the central character. What is the best Gandhi movie?

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbandar, Kanthiawar, India, to father Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi and his fourth wife Putlibai. In 1882 he married Kasturbai Makanji, with whom he had five children. Gandhi enrolled at Samaldas College, Bhaunagar, in 1887 but left after one term. However, he was encouraged to go to London to study law and he left for London on 4 September 1888.

Gandhi was born into a Hindu merchant caste family in 1869. He was the youngest child. His father was the chief minister of an Indian province and showed great skill in maneuvering between British and Indian leaders. Growing up, Gandhi exhibited none of his father's interest in or skill at politics. Instead, he was heavily influenced by the Hinduism and Jainism of his devoutly religious mother. She impressed on him beliefs in non-violence, vegetarianism, fasting for purification, and respect for all religions. "Religions are different roads converging upon the same point," he once said.

In 1888, Gandhi sailed for England where, following the advice of his father, he studied to become a lawyer. When he returned to India three years later, he took a job representing an Indian ship-trading company that was involved in a complicated lawsuit in South Africa.

On a school trip to All India Radio when she was nine her voice was noticed by a producer, who immediately offered her a part in a radio play as the baby Krishna. She was paid five rupees, which she took home and laid at the feet of her grandfather, a man who used to say that "boys are cheques I'll cash when I'm old. Girls are a decree; they will cost me dear." Determined never to be a financial burden, Dub continued radio acting throughout her school and college years for All India Radio and Voice of America.

While at the BBC in the early 1960s Rani had met Richard Attenborough, and he had told her of his plan to make a film of Gandhi's life. Almost 20 years later, when he was still trying to secure funding, he turned to Dub. Western financiers had felt that a film about Gandhi would not appeal to mainstream audiences, so in 1979 Dub flew to India for a meeting with the country's prime minister, Indira Gandhi. She had known Dub's father, but having written the book The Evil Within the previous year in which she criticised the Indian government, she was understandably nervous.
