John Mike Reyes: I knew Mike (as his family called him) since early 7th Grade. We were close that first year and remained good friends on through high school, but not close. I don’t know the circumstances of his death, but I do remember the great times we had at his house early on and what a quiet, funny, compassionate and smart person he was in high school. When I learned years later of his death, I was sad I didn’t make better use of our time together at Arapahoe.

I remember Mike from our days at AHS, a wrestler and genuinely nice guy. A real gentleman. I was so saddened to hear of his passing.

Mike was my locker mate through three years of high school and wrestling. He was competitive wrestler in the lower weights. After high school he was a wrestling referee and used to give the wrestlers some tips. He died too soon. He was a geologist and the small plane he was on crashed and burned while exploring in Utah. He was survived by a lovely wife. Mike had a lot of spirit and was a fighter. He would have accomplished much.

Mike and I actually became good friends our freshman year at CSU, in fact he got me through my freshman year. CSU was so big, and I was so shy, and none of my close friends went to college there, and I had a very difficult time adjusting. We shared some classes over that year, and we challenged each other to do better. Later after college, we attended each other’s weddings and kept in touch. Mike died in a plane crash (I believe in 1978). He was on a company plane that crashed very shortly after take-off from Stapleton. Since at that time, there was not email - and we had moved three times that year, I did not find out until several months later. I named my son Michael (born 1980) in remembrance of Mike.
