Tank Log: Aquarium Water Tests — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-10-04
This privacy policy applies to the mobile app "Tank Log: Aquarium Water Tests" for Android:
- Google Play: package com.moon.aquariumlog, developer "janey-moon"
The app is developed and operated by Heekyung Moon (Google Play developer name: janey-moon).

OVERVIEW
Tank Log: Aquarium Water Tests (shown in the app as "Tank Log") does not require an account, and we do not sell personal information. You use it to record aquarium water tests, care tasks, fishless cycle checks, and water changes for the tanks you add. These records are kept in the app's storage on your device. The app also uses Google services for analytics, crash reporting, remote configuration, and advertising.
NOTIFICATIONS, BACKUP FILES, AND SHARING
Notifications: the app asks for notification permission only when you save a care task with reminders turned on. Reminders are scheduled on your device and show the tank name and task title, which may be visible on your lock screen depending on your settings. If you decline, the reminder option is switched off and you can save the task without a reminder; tests and other tasks keep working.
Backups: when you tap "Write verified backup", the app writes a .zip archive containing the backup data files and a manifest into a backups folder in its documents storage. The data files are first written to a temporary folder to check them, and that folder is removed afterwards. A backup contains your current tanks (name, type, volume, targets, test-kit settings), water tests (date, readings and units, ammonia mode, salinity instrument details, and notes), care tasks and their completion history, cycle checks, water changes, the IDs of deleted records (not their contents), and the raw text of any record the app could not read (if the record index itself cannot be read, the raw text of the app's record files). When the app starts, it normally deletes the backups it wrote except the three most recent ones; backups written after that are kept at least until the app is started again.
Sharing: "Share backup" passes the .zip archive you just wrote to the Android share sheet, and the app or person you choose receives it. "Export raw record" for a record that could not be read writes that record's raw text to a file in a recovery folder in app storage and opens the share sheet. When the app starts, it normally deletes recovery exports except the three most recent ones, and deleting a record also deletes the recovery exports made for it.
Restoring: "Choose backup" opens the system file picker, which needs no storage permission. The files you pick are copied into a temporary imports folder in app storage before they are read; after reading, the app deletes that folder and the temporary copies the picker placed in the app's cache. If an import is interrupted (for example, the app is closed during it), copies can remain; the app normally keeps at most the three most recent leftover import folders when it starts. Restoring merges the backup with your records: the newer version of each record is kept, and records deleted in either place stay deleted. Before applying a restore, the app saves an internal copy of the previous record list.
The app does not use the camera, microphone, location, contacts, or your photos.
INFORMATION STORED ON YOUR DEVICE
The app saves each record as a file in its documents storage, with an index that lists each record's type, date, and name or title. Record types are tanks, water tests, care tasks (title, interval, due time, reminder on or off), task completions (task, task title, time), fishless cycle checks (start time, ammonia target, and lowest readings), and water changes (time and fraction changed). The app sets no limit on the number of tanks, tests, or tasks, and restoring a backup does not apply a count limit either.
To keep deletions in effect after a restore, the app keeps the IDs of deleted records. It also keeps the backup files and recovery exports within the limits described above, and the pre-restore copies. A pre-restore copy can keep the files of records, and earlier versions of edited records, that existed when that restore was made.
The app may also store basic operating information such as an app-use count, whether the review prompt was requested, and cached advertising settings and More Apps list.
The developer does not run a server that receives your records. The app reads developer-controlled advertising settings and a More Apps list from Google Cloud Firestore, but it does not write to Firestore or upload your tanks, tests, tasks, or backups. The More Apps list loads app icons from internet addresses in that list.
ANALYTICS, CRASH REPORTING, AND ADS
Google Firebase Analytics may process limited app-usage and technical information, such as app opens and sessions, an app-use count, review prompt and menu actions (review, More Apps), ad revenue events (ad format, value, currency, and precision), app version, device type, and app-instance identifiers. No event parameter carries values you enter; events do not include tank names, readings, notes, or task titles.
Google Firebase Crashlytics may process crash reports and related technical information needed to diagnose app problems.
The app shows ads through Google AdMob: an app-open ad when you return to the app, an interstitial ad that may appear after you save a water test or mark a care task done, a banner ad, and a native ad in the exit dialog. Google may process advertising identifiers and device, app, consent, network, and ad-performance information to provide and measure ads, and may use an IP address to estimate an approximate location. Banner ads are shown only on the Tanks tab. The app does not start a full-screen ad (app-open or interstitial) while an editor, the Backup sheet, the menu, the exit dialog, or a delete confirmation is open.
PERMISSIONS AND ADVERTISING CHOICES
Feature permissions: notifications, for the care-task reminders you turn on. The app also uses vibration, a permission Android grants without asking, for short haptic feedback when you tap a main button or when an action such as a save, backup, or restore completes. The app does not request camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos and media, or storage access. You can change notification permission in Android Settings at any time.
At launch, before ads are requested, Google's consent message (UMP) is checked and shown where required (for example in the EEA and UK). If that step completes and Google reports that ads cannot be requested, the app does not request ads. Personalized ads are requested only when consent is not required or your choice allows personalized advertising; otherwise ads are non-personalized. If the consent step fails (the consent information cannot be updated, the consent message cannot be loaded, or your saved choice cannot be read), the app requests non-personalized ads only.
Where Google requires it, the app menu shows "Privacy choices", which reopens the consent message so you can change your advertising choice. If that message cannot be opened or your new choice cannot be read, the app stops requesting ads until it is closed and started again.
STORAGE AND YOUR CONTROL
On the Tanks tab, Delete removes the selected tank together with its tests, care tasks, task completion history, cycle checks, and water changes from the app's records. On the Log tab, Delete removes that one test, water change, or cycle check; task completions shown there have no delete button. On the Tasks tab, Delete removes that task and cancels its reminder; its earlier completions stay in the history until the tank is deleted. The files of deleted records are normally removed from app storage when you delete them, but they can remain if a pre-restore copy refers to them or cannot be read; their IDs are kept.
The app has no button to delete backups, recovery exports, or pre-restore copies; older backups and recovery exports are removed only by the startup cleanup described above, and pre-restore copies are not removed by the app. Clearing the app's storage in Android Settings or uninstalling the app removes them along with the rest of the app's storage. Backups and exports you shared are controlled by the app or person that received them, or by the place where you saved them.
Local data, including backup files, may be included in a Google or device backup depending on your backup settings (the app allows Android system backup). Uninstalling normally removes the active copy but may not remove an older backup.
Because we do not receive your records, we cannot delete them for you; the controls above remove them from the app. For questions about data processed by Google, or to ask us for help with a privacy request, contact us at the address below.
We use these services under their applicable terms, and we ensure that third-party service providers with whom we share user data provide the same or equal protection of that data as stated in this policy. Data processed by Google is retained according to its service settings and policies:

SECURITY
Your records and backup files are kept in the app's private storage, which the operating system protects from other apps; they are not separately encrypted by the app, so protect your device with a screen lock. Backup archives are not encrypted, so anyone who receives a shared backup can read its contents. Apart from the limited analytics events described above, the app does not upload your saved data. Communication between the app and Google services uses encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we limit what the app handles to what is described in this policy.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Tank Log is a record-keeping aid. It does not test water itself; results depend on your test kit and the values you enter. Calculated un-ionized ammonia (NH3), the cycle check, tank volume estimates, and water-change and dosing figures are approximate and are not a judgement of whether your water is safe for your animals. Follow your test kit and product label instructions, and ask an aquarium professional or a veterinarian about the health of your fish and invertebrates. Reminders may be delayed or not delivered, so do not rely on them alone for urgent care. Keep test reagents and water treatments away from children and pets.
CHILDREN
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
CHANGES
We may update this policy if the app or its services change. The date above shows the latest revision.
