Today was a truly inspiring day as we visited SMK Raden Umar Said (RUS), one of the most advanced vocational schools in Kudus. From the moment we stepped into the school, we were greeted by a vibrant atmosphere filled with creativity, discipline, and innovation.
The visit started with a short orientation, where school representatives shared with us the history and mission of SMK RUS. We learned that the school specializes in creative multimedia, animation, design, and video production, offering students real-world experience even before they graduate.
As we toured around the school, we got to see several impressive facilities:
Multimedia and animation studios equipped with high-end computers and industry software.
Photography rooms and video editing suites where students were actively working on their projects.
Student production studios where real client-based projects are produced—proof that these students are already developing professional skills.
What stood out the most was how the students conducted themselves. Despite their young age, they showed professionalism, teamwork, and discipline, qualities that are usually seen in a working environment. Many of them even took the time to explain their projects to us in English, showing not only their technical skills but also their confidence.
We also had the opportunity to observe how the school culture at SMK RUS plays a central role in student development. The students practice a strong sense of punctuality and responsibility. They follow a strict daily routine, wear proper uniforms, and participate actively in flag ceremonies and school-wide campaigns. The culture promotes respect, creativity, and collaborative learning—students are encouraged to explore their talents while upholding values of humility and discipline.
We were touched by how students greeted us with polite gestures and smiles. Even during their busy schedules, they remained courteous and enthusiastic. The teachers and staff were equally welcoming and supportive, maintaining a positive atmosphere of mutual respect and mentorship.
One of the highlights of the visit was watching a short animated video created by students—it was of high quality, and we were surprised to learn that it had been submitted to several competitions.
We were also amazed to discover that SMK RUS has its own animation studio under RUS Animation Studio, which takes in commissioned work and trains students on actual production timelines. It's a real testament to how the school blends education with hands-on industry experience.
Reflection:
Visiting SMK RUS was eye-opening. It redefined my understanding of what a senior high school can offer. Their model of combining technical-vocational training with real-world exposure, grounded in a culture of discipline and creativity, is something that I would love to see applied in my home country. As a future teacher, this experience fuels my passion to bring more meaningful, practical learning to the classroom. It’s not just about teaching — it’s about preparing students for life, building character, and nurturing talent.
