Smithsonian National Museum of African American History
Tickets are free 30 days out pic dates and time
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture is a state-of-the-art building that addresses nearly every aspect of the African American experience, covering the arts, slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, athletics and much more. The building’s exterior, conceived by Ghanaian-born architect David Adjaye, is artfully made up of a three-tiered, bronze-colored screen. This lattice pays tribute to the intricate ironwork forged by enslaved African Americans in the southern United States.
Frederick Douglass National Historic Site
The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site preserves the last residence of Frederick Douglass (1818 -1895), one of the most prominent African American leaders of the 19th century. Tours available. Reservations required for groups of 10 or more. Open 9 am - 5pm (Apr.15 - Oct.15) and 9am - 4pm (Oct.16 - Apr.14).
Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum
tickets are free 30 days out pic dates and time
Even though the museum has broadened its focus in recent years, its collections contain thousands of unique artifacts related to the local African American community. From family archives of 19th-century African American locals to works from black DC artists, the artifacts highlight how inextricably linked the museum is to its local surroundings. These relics have been used in exhibits and continue to tell the story of east-of-the-river communities in DC. The museum is located a mile from the Anacostia stop on Metro’s Green Line in DC's Anacostia neighborhood. It is also serviced by taxis and ride-sharing options like Uber and Lyft. The museum offers free parking and, in summertime, a free round-trip shuttle that picks up at the National Mall and Anacostia Metro station. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The African American Civil War Memorial
The African American Civil War Memorial, dedicated under the leadership of Dr. Frank Smith Jr. and Colin Powell, serves as tribute to the United States Colored Troops (USCT). The wall lists the names of 209,145 USCT who fought for freedom during the American Civil War. The bronze statue and related museum just across the street, where kids can try on Civil War attire and commemorate the African American soldiers who fought for the Union during the Civil War. The memorial is located at the corner of Vermont Avenue, 10th St and U St NW. The nearest Metro stop is the Green and Yellow line, U St/African American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo stop.
The Enslaved People of Mount Vernon Tour
Listen to the stories of the enslaved people who built and operated Mount Vernon, and learn about their daily lives on the estate during this 60-minute tour. Kids could also learn about George Washington, in general, while on his estate.

This examination of espionage will teach your kids about the fascinating spies who have contributed to world events. Attendees will get to glimpse at special equipment, including cameras and vehicles, and sign up for programs (ideal for kids under 10) that will have them embark on secret missions, climb through duct work, diffuse an atomic bomb, hang from a construction site and test their own spy skills. Try visiting on weekdays to avoid crowds and, if weekends are your only option, come early. That shouldn’t be hard if your kids are serious about espionage: The best spies are always on time.
