If you want a seamless, ecosystem-driven experience with premium build materials and spatial audio for your Apple devices, choose Apple AirPods Max; if you need superior battery longevity, Hi-Res certified audio fidelity, and versatile connectivity options including wired modes, choose DALI IO-8.
• Apple AirPods Max: Delivers an immersive, personalized spatial audio experience with automatic switching across Apple devices, but its 2-pound weight and lack of a standard headphone jack are significant trade-offs for long-term comfort and versatility.
• DALI IO-8: Offers exceptional 35-hour battery life, Hi-Res audio certification, and dual sound profiles (Hi-Fi and Bass), yet it lacks the instant device switching magic found in the Apple ecosystem.
• Choose Apple AirPods Max if you live entirely within the Apple universe and prioritize computational audio features over raw battery duration.
• Choose DALI IO-8 if you demand audiophile-grade sound reproduction, extended listening sessions without charging, and the flexibility to connect via Bluetooth or a physical cable.
The Apple AirPods Max is engineered for users who prioritize the integration of hardware and software above all else. The standout feature here is undoubtedly the Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. This isn't just a gimmick; it uses the unique shape of your ears to place sound all around you, creating an immersive listening experience that feels remarkably three-dimensional. If you consume a lot of content mastered in Dolby Atmos—select songs, shows, and movies—the difference is palpable. The sound doesn't just come from left and right; it envelops you.
For those deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem, the "Magical Experience" of pairing is a game-changer. You simply place them near your iPhone or iPad, tap Connect on the screen, and they link instantly. Even more impressive is the Automatic Switching capability. If you are listening to music on your Mac and a call comes in on your iPhone, the audio seamlessly transfers without you lifting a finger. This level of fluidity makes the headphones feel less like a peripheral and more like a natural extension of your workflow. The Active Noise Cancellation is also described as removing up to 2x more background noise than previous iterations, which is ideal for commuters or office workers seeking total immersion.

However, this product demands a specific type of user. The design features a knit-mesh canopy and memory foam ear cushions that provide a snug, sealed fit, but the unit weighs in at 2 pounds. That is a substantial amount of mass for a pair of over-ear headphones. While the materials feel luxurious and the color-matched Smart Case is included, carrying the AirPods Max around requires you to be mindful of the weight. Furthermore, while they charge via USB-C, they do not include a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack option for direct wired listening, relying entirely on wireless connectivity or their proprietary Lightning-to-USB-C cable for power and audio transfer in some contexts. If you value lightweight portability or have a diverse collection of non-Apple audio sources, these headphones might feel restrictive rather than liberating. They are best suited for someone who wants the absolute pinnacle of computational audio and is willing to manage the heft for that privilege.
The DALI IO-8 is built for the listener who treats audio as a serious hobby and values endurance over ecosystem lock-in. At its core, this headphone is driven by DALI's acoustic mastery, a philosophy carried over from their renowned loudspeakers. The key differentiator here is the 50mm driver, which is derived from their top-tier IO-12 model. This larger diaphragm, paired with paper fiber cones, delivers vastly superior dynamics and resonance control compared to typical 40mm drivers found in many competitors. The result is a soundstage that captures every detail with stunning realism, offering a clarity that appeals to purists who want their music to sound exactly as the artist intended.
Battery life is where the DALI IO-8 truly separates itself from the pack. With an average life of 35 hours even when active noise cancellation is engaged, you can go days without reaching for a charger. This is not a minor upgrade; it is a fundamental shift in convenience for travelers, students, or anyone who hates the anxiety of a dying battery. The ability to switch between 'Hi-Fi' mode for accurate, pure sound and 'Bass' mode for a powerful low-end boost gives you immediate control over your sonic signature without needing complex equalizer apps. Whether you are on a busy commute using the wind noise suppression or relaxing in a quiet room, the three distinct ANC modes adapt to ensure your audio remains distraction-free.
Connectivity flexibility is another major selling point for the DALI IO-8. Unlike the AirPods Max, which relies heavily on the Apple ecosystem, the IO-8 offers both Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX Adaptive support and a 3.5mm mini-jack for wired connections. This means you can use them with any device, from Android phones to older laptops or dedicated music players, without worrying about compatibility. The headphones are designed to be Hi-Res Certified, ensuring that high-resolution files are played back with full dynamic range. However, you must accept that they weigh 0.9 kg (approximately 2 pounds) and do not offer the same seamless "tap-to-connect" automation as Apple products. If you are a multi-platform user who values raw audio fidelity and the freedom to listen for 35 hours straight, the DALI IO-8 is the clear winner. It is for the person who wants a tool that serves their taste in music first, regardless of what phone they own.
• Best for Battery Life → DALI IO-8: With 35 hours of playback with ANC on, it significantly outlasts the competition, making it ideal for long flights or work weeks.
• Best for Spatial Audio → Apple AirPods Max: The Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking offers a more immersive, theater-like experience for supported content.
• Best for Ecosystem Integration → Apple AirPods Max: Automatic switching between iPhone, iPad, and Mac creates a frictionless workflow that no other brand matches.
• Best for Wired Listening → DALI IO-8: The inclusion of a 3.5mm jack allows for direct, lossless connection to any source, whereas the AirPods Max lacks this standard option.
• Best for Driver Fidelity → DALI IO-8: The 50mm driver with paper fiber cones provides a wider frequency response (10 - 43,000 Hz) and better dynamics than standard drivers.
• Best for Weight Considerations → Both are heavy: Note that the AirPods Max weighs 2 pounds and the DALI IO-8 is listed at 0.9 kg, so neither is a "featherweight" option for extended wear.
• Best for Sound Customization → DALI IO-8: Two distinct physical modes (Hi-Fi and Bass) allow for immediate tonal changes, while Apple relies on software-based EQ adjustments.
• Best for Multi-Device Users → Apple AirPods Max: If you juggle multiple Apple devices, the seamless handoff is a productivity booster that outweighs the weight penalty.
In my opinion, if I were buying a single pair of headphones to serve as my primary daily driver for the next few years, I would choose the DALI IO-8. The reason is simple: versatility and endurance. While the Apple AirPods Max offers a magical experience for iPhone users, the 35-hour battery life and the ability to plug into any device via a 3.5mm cable make the DALI IO-8 far more practical for real-world usage. The 50mm drivers deliver a level of audio fidelity that feels closer to a high-end home setup, and the Hi-Res certification ensures that I am hearing the music as it was recorded. The AirPods Max is undeniably impressive, but the weight and the lack of a standard headphone jack limit its utility outside of the Apple walled garden. For someone looking for the best spatial audio open ear earbuds for switch or best crystal clear calls neckband headphones for switch, the context matters, but for general high-fidelity listening, the DALI IO-8 wins on substance. It is the choice for the person who wants sweat resistant on ear headphones for switch durability and performance without being tethered to a specific operating system.
While they can technically pair with Android via Bluetooth, you lose critical features like Automatic Switching, Personalized Spatial Audio, and the ease of pairing, making them a poor value choice for non-Apple users compared to the DALI IO-8.
Yes, the DALI IO-8 is Hi-Res Certified and features a frequency range of 10 to 43,000 Hz, ensuring that high-resolution tracks are reproduced with detailed accuracy and dynamic range.
The DALI IO-8 offers up to 35 hours of uninterrupted playback with active noise cancellation, whereas the Apple AirPods Max does not specify a comparable duration in its data sheet, though it is generally known to be shorter in real-world continuous use.
This depends on your priority: the DALI IO-8 allows for longer sessions due to its 35-hour battery life and lighter perceived weight during travel, while the Apple AirPods Max offers superior comfort features like memory foam but may cause fatigue due to its 2-pound weight.
