What is Musicianship?
As a musician at University High School, your curriculum includes a four-course series on the historical and theoretical development of music throughout the ages. This in-depth study will allow you to see the music you perform everyday from the eyes of the composers that created them. By studying the compositional and performance practices of each Era, you will gain a deeper understanding of how the collaborative art of music functions and remains vibrant in our ears today.
What is AP Music Theory?
The AP Music Theory course focuses on concepts and skills emphasized within introductory collegiate music theory courses, with the goal of helping students become sophisticated and thoughtful music listeners, performers, and composers. AP Music Theory students learn to recognize, understand, describe, and produce the basic elements and processes of performed and notated music. T o become proficient with these skills, students need to consistently practice applying course concepts through aural analysis, score analysis, sight-singing, dictation, and composition.
Who teaches AP Music Theory and Musicianship III?
Musicianship III (and AP Music Theory) is taught by Mr. Matthew Haltom.
Matthew Haltom is from southern Arkansas, studied music education at Ouachita Baptist University, and completed a Masters degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Missouri. Although currently holding the position of Choral Director at UHS, he has taught at several institutions all over the United States. Outside of the classroom, Mr. Haltom performs as a classical countertenor soloist in such works as J.S. Bach’s “Mass in B minor” and Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana”. He has also found acclaim and accolades in the show choir realm as an arranger/composer and was recognized by Show Choirs of America as an emerging artist to follow.
