Abstract
Digital human capture has evolved significantly over the past five decades, from marker-based motion capture systems such as Vicon, through mesh-based volumetric capture platforms such as 4Dviews, to today's 3D/4D Gaussian Splatting and AI-driven digital human generation. These advances are reshaping how human performances are captured, reconstructed, and experienced in immersive spatial media. Among these technologies, Gaussian Splatting has emerged as a major turning point, enabling photorealistic digital humans and high-fidelity spatial environments. In this presentation, I will illustrate this evolution through three representative cultural XR projects. The first project, Gods on Parade: A Celebration of Taiwan's Lantern Festival, employs mesh-based volumetric capture for both performers and environments. The second, Oriental Beauty: An Immersive XR Tea Experience, combines 4D Gaussian Splatting for digital humans with mesh-based environments. The third, The Incredible NTU: A Centennial XR Journey, applies Gaussian Splatting to both digital humans and spatial environments, representing the next stage of immersive spatial media production. Together, these projects illustrate the evolution from mesh-based volumetric capture to Gaussian Splatting as the technological foundation for next-generation immersive spatial media.
SHORT BIO
Yi-Ping Hung is a Professor at National Taiwan University specializing in computer vision, human-computer interaction, and immersive XR technologies. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University and his Ph.D. from Brown University. He previously served as Director of the Graduate Institute of Networking and Multimedia at NTU, Provost of Tainan National University of the Arts, and Academic Vice President of Taipei National University of the Arts. He was the founding President of the Taiwan Society of Human-Computer Interaction and served as President of the Taiwan Art and Technology Association. Combining academic research with creative practice, he has published more than 200 technical papers and created numerous award-winning VR/XR experiences, many in collaboration with the National Palace Museum. His work bridges advanced imaging, digital humans, and immersive spatial media for cultural heritage, education, and the arts.
