Miles possesses a "spider sense", which warns the player of incoming attacks and allows them to dodge and retaliate, and web-shooters, which fire lines of webs that can be used during both traversal and combat, in several different ways. Miles can also jump large distances, stick to surfaces, and fast travel using the New York City Subway system. There are several unlockable suits for Miles, some of which are based on existing versions of the character in media, as well as original suits created for the game. Many of these enhance Miles' abilities, such as allowing him to take more damage, stay invisible for a longer time, or regenerate Venom Power faster. During certain sections of the game, players control Miles in his civilian persona and cannot use any of his abilities or gadgets.

The narrative of the game continues from where Marvel's Spider-Man and its downloadable content The City That Never Sleeps left off, during which Miles Morales (Nadji Jeter) was bitten by a genetically enhanced spider and gained powers similar to his mentor and friend Peter Parker (Yuri Lowenthal). A year after the first game's conclusion, Miles has been trained by Parker, moved from Brooklyn to Harlem, and has fully integrated himself into the role of a Spider-Man. He is still in the process of gaining experience and doubts whether he can live up to Parker's legacy. At the beginning of the game, Parker leaves New York for Symkaria for several weeks to help his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson with her reporting there and trusts Miles to protect the city in his absence. Now the sole Spider-Man, Miles must balance his superhero responsibilities with supporting his mother Rio Morales (Jacqueline Piol) in her campaign for City Council and defending his new home from a violent war between the corrupt Roxxon Energy Corporation and a high-tech criminal army known as the Underground.[2]

After Norman Osborn was arrested by S.H.I.E.L.D and publicly revealed as the Green Goblin, and nearly two months before Peter Parker's death, Miles' uncle, Aaron Davis, broke into the abandoned Osborn Industries. Unbeknownst to the thief, a spider genetically enhanced with the Oz Formula crawled into his bag.

Miles visited his uncle (which was against his parents' wishes, due to his uncle's criminal past) after being awarded the final spot in the charter school lottery. At his uncle's apartment Miles was bitten by the Oz-enhanced spider, which emerged from Aaron's bag, and Miles discovered he received superhuman abilities like camouflage, increased agility, as well as some sort of stun blast, and upon revealing his newly found powers to his best friend, Ganke Lee, both concluded he had power similar to Spider-Man's, including wall-crawling.[37][38] But Miles reacted negatively, as he just wanted to be normal, and decided to leave heroism to the actual Spider-Man.

After the restored Web of Life and Destiny started to be corrupted due to the Patternmaker going missing, Miles was recruited by Spider-Zero to help find Annie.[131] During his travelling, he aided Spider-Ma'am and her team in battling evil versions of themselves, including an evil version of himself, which were lead by a Carnage-possessed Aunt May. They were able to defeat them and Miles continued his search.[132] He then teamed up with SP//dr to fight against Kraven who had been enhanced by Mister Sinister, but luckily they were victorious.[133] He helped Web-Slinger in defeating Scorpion,[22] and also helped The Spider-Man in battling Madame Swarm and after the battle Miles retrieved the Spider Idol statue which was necessary to fix the web.[134] After that, Miles, along with Spider-Zero and a number of spider-heroes, went to the web where they found out that a tangled node was formed and had trapped Spiderling. Out of pain and fear the tangle summoned the Machine Bem Monsters of Earth-51778 in order to fend off the spiders. While Spider-Zero used her powers to cure the web, Miles was successful in rescuing Spiderling from the tangle. After the tangle was undone, all of the spiders returned to their respective reality.[135]

Hand-to-Hand Combat: Despite not possessing any formal combat training prior to being bitten, Miles' spider-sense and reflexes make him a capable melee fighter. He has studied Peter's moves in combat by watching old footage of his past battles to improve his own combat skills.[43] He has also received combat training from the Ultimates and was taught Drunken Fu by his Uncle Aaron when watching Jackie Chan movies.[164][165] After joining Misty Knight's detective agency as an intern, Miles finally received formal combat training which in tandem with his powers have made the Spider-Man into an even more formidable combatant.[166]

A Brooklyn native and the son of decorated officer Jefferson Davis and councilor Rio Morales, Miles is introduced to Peter when he works at the F.E.A.S.T. shelter. Initially helping Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker during the Devil's Breath crisis, he eventually gains powers after Mary Jane brings back one of Oscorp's experimental spiders. He then trains under Peter to become his own Spider-Man, receiving the help of his best friend, Ganke Lee, who provides mission ops and develops the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man App to support him. Miles truly comes into his own when a clash between Roxxon and the Underground threatens his neighborhood of Harlem. He subsequently represents New York City's community at both Harlem and Brooklyn.

Miles was bitten by a genetically modified Oscorp spider unknowingly brought back from Norman Osborn's secret lab by Mary Jane Watson. By "The Heart of the Matter", Miles was mostly running the shelter and helped Morgan Michaels find care for a wounded Spider-Man. Following the Devil's Breath crisis, Miles consoled Peter at May Parker's funeral and allowed Peter to crash at his while his new place was getting ready. Miles slowly revealed his newfound powers, first to his best friend Ganke Lee,[1] and then to Peter, who in turn revealed his secret identity to Miles.[12]

In "Hold Onto Your Web-Shooters", Peter contacted Miles while he was picking up food, needing help overseeing the transport of Raft prisoner Rhino. Miles accidentally released Rhino by throwing the transport cell off balance, and the two pursued Rhino throughout the city. In the Roxxon energy complex, Miles, revealing his bio-electricity power, defeated Rhino and met Simon Krieger, who promised to apprehend Rhino and thanked them; Miles was skeptical, but Peter suggested they allow the police to handle it.[16] Shortly after, in "Parting Gift", Peter left for Symkaria with Mary Jane, entrusting the city to Miles and leaving him a new spider-suit.

In "Time to Rally", Miles attended his mother's campaign rally. The Underground's leader, the Tinkerer, hijacked the screen to indict Simon Krieger as a killer and attack the Roxxon guards present. At Braithwaite Bridge, while Underground attempted to steal Nuform, Miles learned that the Tinkerer was, in fact, his friend Phin, and accidentally caused an explosion at the bridge. Though he successfully saved the civilians, who thanked him, Roxxon branded him a criminal, and the Underground branded him an enemy, and Miles escaped while stumbling across a new power, his biological camouflage.[19] After Miles and Ganke spent hours designing a new spider-suit, Peter called and offered to fly out to help, but Miles assured him he could handle it.[20]

After gaining his powers and receiving several months of training from Peter, Miles becomes leaner and more muscular. Like Peter, he would start wearing one of several different spider-themed suits designed to conceal his identity and provide additional protection. Notable examples include:

Miles' radioactive spider bite in Marvel's Spider-Man granted him superhuman abilities and spider physiology. Many of these strengths are similar to the original Spider-Man's, including exceptional agility, durability, wall-crawling, and heightened reflexes. Uniquely, Miles possesses "venom powers," a form of bio-electricity that allows for offensive techniques and defenses. Notably, his tolerance for bio-electricity was tested with a 300-kilojoule electrified barrier.[31] Additionally, his "camouflage" power enables him to become virtually invisible.

Miles Morales was introduced through Marvel's Ultimate Comics imprint, first appearing briefly in Ultimate Fallout #4 before a full introduction via his own series entitled Ultimate Comics Spider-Man a month later in September 2011. Originating in the alternate reality of the Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610), Miles was a teenager from Brooklyn bitten by a radioactive spider accidentally taken from a defunct Oscorp laboratory that had been trying to recreate the spider which gave the original Spider-Man, Peter Parker, his powers.[32] Following the death of Peter Parker in the Ultimate Universe, Miles decided of his own volition to take up the mantle of Spider-Man and began protecting the people of New York City in whatever ways he could.[33] Miles quickly made friends with many additional superheroes of the city, and notably became a member of the Ultimate Universe's version of the Avengers (known as the Ultimates) before taking a year off from super heroics.[32][34] Following a multiversal collapse that caused different universes to merge and be eliminated,[35] Miles' home universe was destroyed and he began a new version of his life in the primary Marvel Universe, Earth-616, where he once again became a member of that universe's Avengers and was mentored by Earth-616's Spider-Man.[36]

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's big cliffhanger comes in the form of the Prowler, who makes a shocking return in a different universe. After arriving in the wrong universe, Miles Morales finds out Aaron Davis is alive, but despite following along and posing as this Aaron's nephew, Aaron understands that Miles is a different person. Aaron captures him and ties him up so he can meet his multiversal counterpart: a Miles Morales variant who never got bitten by a radioactive spider and thus never became Spider-Man. Instead, this version of Miles became the Prowler, seemingly due to his closer relationship with his uncle, and potentially because of the circumstances surrounding Earth-42's alternate universe. ff782bc1db
