In the summer of 2022, Pakistan experienced severe flooding due to record rainfall, displacing over 30 million people, while heatwaves persisted in central China and Europe. Our analysis links these events to compounding factors, including La Niña-induced easterlies, intense southerlies from the Arabian Sea, and interactions between extratropical and tropical systems. Wave activity flux and regression analyses revealed a distinct Rossby wave-like pattern connecting these extremes, differing from previously reported patterns. The 2022 floods were an intensified version of the 2010 event, driven by similar but increasingly pronounced factors. [Full Article]
