GEO DAT 4 Web is an interactive surveying work environment that lets you create control networks, survey stations, topo shots, observations and residuals; perform Least Squares Adjustment; investigate errors; edit coordinates; exclude observations; manage layers; process route surveys; and even perform office drafting.
In other words, you no longer have to simply watch surveying activity happen.
Now you can actively participate in it.
One of the main advantages of GEO DAT 4 Web is that the entire application is contained in a single standalone HTML file.
There is nothing to install.
Simply open the file in a modern browser such as Google Chrome.
No server is required, and no internet connection is needed during normal use. The interface, application logic, graphics and project data processing all run locally inside the browser.
In practice, GEO DAT behaves much like a regular desktop engineering application — it just happens to launch from an HTML file.
If the visible presence of a browser slightly reduces the atmosphere of serious engineering activity, the solution is extremely simple.
In Google Chrome, press:
F11
The browser switches to full-screen mode, hiding the tabs, address bar and other Chrome interface elements.
Only GEO DAT remains visible.
At that point, someone casually walking past your monitor will have a surprisingly difficult time determining that the application is running inside a browser at all.
Visually, it becomes an ordinary standalone technical application.
Which is, of course, an important part of the user experience.
GEO DAT automatically creates a detailed surveying environment containing:
FIXED control points;
working stations;
topo shots;
traverse and control connections;
observations;
coordinates;
feature codes;
residuals;
statistical parameters;
adjustment results.
You can work with either a compact area network or a long linear survey.
The number of stations, observations and topo shots can be adjusted by the user.
If the project does not look sufficiently serious, simply add another few hundred points.
For linear projects, GEO DAT includes a dedicated Route Network mode.
It transforms a compact control network into a long corridor survey with stations extending across the screen and large numbers of topo shots along the alignment.
The Stretch Factor controls the overall scale of the situation.
A rough classification:
1.0 — small project.
3.0 — normal route survey.
5.0 — substantial linear project.
10.0 — probably a government contract.
Route projects also include a Longitudinal Profile and interactive Cross Sections, allowing the user to inspect the project from several suitably technical perspectives.
The Adjust command runs a Least Squares Adjustment.
The program reports:

RMS Height;
Standard Error;
Normalized Residual;
Degrees of Freedom;
Iterations;
Residuals.
In the current version, adjustment is deliberately prevented from ending in complete happiness.
Every adjustment identifies:
4 CHECK observations
and
2 ERROR observations.
Yellow rows require attention.
Red rows require considerably more attention.
Problem observations can be excluded and the adjustment can then be run again.
At which point GEO DAT will, quite reasonably, discover problems somewhere else.
This allows network analysis to continue for an impressively long time and makes the process considerably more representative of real engineering work.
Each adjustment run is also recorded in Adjustment History, where previous σ₀, RMS values, residual statistics and flagged observations can be reviewed.
Adjustment results are not limited to tables.
GEO DAT can display Residual Vectors and Error Ellipses directly on the network.
The Network Diagnostics tool identifies weak areas of geometry, reduced redundancy and suspicious observation dependencies, and highlights the relevant locations directly on the drawing.
Selecting a diagnostic result can take you directly to the affected point.
For particularly troublesome observations, Investigate Issue provides a suitably serious dependency analysis and a list of possible causes.
And if necessary, Resolve Selected Issue can attempt to correct the problem.
Naturally, this does not guarantee that the next adjustment will not discover another one.
The Observations tab contains a complete observation table with:
From;
To;
Type;
Observed;
Std.Error;
Weight;
Residual;
Norm.Res;
Face;
State.
This is no longer merely a table to look at.
Almost any row can be clicked to open its properties.
Observed values, accuracy, weight, residual and observation state can be changed directly.
An observation may remain in use, be marked as CHECK or ERROR, or be excluded entirely.
The resulting changes are immediately reflected elsewhere in the application.
New observations can also be created manually by selecting two points directly on the network.
Survey points themselves are editable.
Clicking a point record opens Point Properties, where you can modify:
Point ID;
Northing / X;
Easting / Y;
Elevation / Z;
Code;
Quality;
Status.
Changing a coordinate actually moves the point on the drawing and updates the connected geometry.
Network stations can also be changed between FIXED and FREE status.
Because even in a completely unnecessary surveying project, some control still has to be maintained.
GEO DAT allows topo shots to be connected directly on the drawing.
Available line styles include:
Continuous;
Dashed;
Center;
Dotted;
Fence;
Curb.
The cursor snaps to existing topo shots and user-created points.
Feature codes such as EP, CURB, CL, FENCE, ROAD, DITCH, TOE and TOP can also be processed automatically into Code-Based Linework.
The user can therefore complete the full journey from automatically generated nonsense to nonsense that has been carefully edited by hand.
If the existing topo shots are insufficient, additional points can be created anywhere in the project.
Each user point may have its own:
name;
code;
coordinates;
symbol.
Triangles, circles, crosses, squares, diamonds, stars and other symbols are available.
Manual points also participate in snapping and can be used as vertices in subsequent drafting.
One of the main features of the latest version is increased interface interactivity.
Rows throughout the program are no longer simply rows.
Clicking them opens the appropriate properties window.
This applies to:
Points;
Observations;
Adjusted Coordinates;
Residuals;
Layers;
Network Sets.
Changes made in one part of the application immediately appear elsewhere.
Right-clicking directly on the network also opens a context menu with commands such as Properties, Zoom to Point, Show Related Observations, Set FIXED/FREE, Create Observation, Measure From Here and Exclude Point.
As a result, GEO DAT is no longer simply a technical-looking picture.
It is an environment in which a surprising amount of time can be spent adjusting, checking, investigating and reconsidering things that did not need to exist in the first place.
The built-in measurement tool calculates:
Horizontal Distance;
Bearing / Azimuth;
Elevation Difference;
Slope Distance.
For traverse networks, Traverse Closure reports ΔX, ΔY, linear misclosure, angular misclosure and relative precision.
The calculated closure can even be distributed through the network.
Whether that improves the project emotionally is left to the user.

After a source is selected, GEO DAT analyzes the format and displays the detected record count, units and Field Mapping.
If everything goes according to plan, the user receives the concise and reassuring message:
SUCCESSFUL
Which is how all data imports should end.
The complete GEO DAT project can be saved to a local project file.
The saved project includes network geometry, coordinates, observations, excluded objects, user points, drafting, layers, parameters and adjustment history.
The project can then be opened later and work can continue from the same state.
GEO DAT can generate a separate HTML Adjustment Report containing project information, adjustment statistics, flagged observations and adjusted coordinates.
The report opens in a new browser tab and can be printed or saved as PDF using the browser’s normal print function.
Because no serious engineering activity is truly complete until it has produced a report.
The mouse wheel zooms around the cursor.
The middle mouse button or Shift + LMB pans the network.
Deep zoom allows a single survey point to be enlarged until everyone nearby completely loses track of the overall project.
