Dr. Abdullah Ansari
Assistant Professor (Research),
Earthquake Monitoring Center (EMC),
Sultan Qaboos University (SQU)
Muscat (Oman)
Dr. Abdullah Ansari commenced his role as Assistant Professor (Research) at the Earthquake Monitoring Center (EMC), Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) Muscat, Oman in February 2024. His professional journey began when he assumed the position of Postdoctoral Researcher at Inje University (Republic of Korea) in June 2023. Dr. Abdullah Ansari also serves as a visiting faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Smart City Engineering (SmartMast Lab) at Inha University in the Republic of Korea. He got his Ph.D. from the Civil Engineering Department of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) India in March 2023, focusing on the seismic hazard of the Himalayan region. His research delved into the practical application of seismic risk assessment for tunneling projects in Jammu and Kashmir, one of the most dynamically active tectonic regions globally. Before this, he obtained his M. Tech. and B.E. degree, specializing in Geological Technology from the Earth Science Department of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) India in 2018, and in Civil Engineering from the Government College of Engineering and Research Pune (GCOEARA Pune) India in 2016, respectively.
Dr. Ansari is a multidisciplinary researcher engaged in multifaceted exploration across various domains, including geotechnical earthquake engineering, geophysical testing and site exploration, seismic risk analysis, machine learning, and infrastructure resilience. His research endeavors predominantly revolve around seismic hazard analysis, risk evaluation, and reliability assessment pertaining to pivotal infrastructure initiatives. The overarching goal of Dr. Ansari's research is to leverage these insights for effective disaster mitigation and management strategies.
To date, the tangible implementations of seismic studies have been investigated across a spectrum of disciplines, including but not limited to :
(a) Tunnelling and bridge projects
(b) Railway Engineering
(c) Nuclear Power Plants
(d) Landslide and flood challenges involved projects
(e) Tsunami resilience and coastal structures
Dr. Ansari's research extends beyond merely examining seismic hazard, vulnerability, and risk; it delves into site-specific case studies and encompasses the sustainable and resilient design of a variety of structures, including buildings, highways, nuclear power plants, coastal structures, and urban underground utilities (3U). Together with his collaborators, Dr. Ansari has applied fundamental seismic study data to enhance the functionality and resilience of railway tracks using machine learning techniques. His research efforts have significantly advanced the understanding of the practical applications of resilient transportation infrastructure projects. Such infrastructure forms a cornerstone of a robust economy, facilitating access to markets, employment opportunities, and essential social services. Consequently, the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasize the urgent need to enhance access to sustainable and resilient infrastructure.
Furthermore, Dr. Ansari's significant work and contributions have earned widespread recognition and have been published in esteemed scientific journals, leaving a lasting impact on the scientific community. In addition to his research efforts focusing on the Himalayas, Dr. Ansari has embarked on a new endeavor: employing artificial intelligence techniques to model seismically induced landslides and associated damage. This undertaking is both challenging and promising, as the outcomes promise to be highly beneficial for future applications in building and highway construction. Dr. Ansari has also successfully executed numerous funded research projects. Furthermore, he is actively engaged in consultancy projects centered around the seismic performance evaluation, retrofitting, and rehabilitation of buildings, tunnels, and bridges.
