A great training tool for classroom or for personal use! In recent years, Barron's American Accent Training has gained wide respect as a self-teaching program, but more and more speech trainers, teachers, and speech therapists report that they are also using it as a valuable teaching tool in their speech classes. This new edition now comes with downloadable audio. The program goes where no American accent training tool has gone before, providing highly innovative instruction for both students and business people. The structure of the book has been reorganized, offering students a much more clear and direct sequence of lessons and a path to better understandingThe downloadable audio component features professional male and female voices that have been carefully selected to represent authentic American pronunciation and intonationPronunciation exercises encompass all vowel sounds, consonants, blends, and diphthongsEmphasis on linking, or phonetically transcribed sound liaisons, help students "see" the correct soundsDesigned for foreign-born students and business people working, traveling, or studying in the United States and Canada Supplementary materials include detailed nationality guides for 11 languages (Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Korean, Arabic, the U.S. Southern accent, and African languages). More valuable features include access to a comprehensive website, and referral to a qualified telephone analyst for an individual diagnostic speech analysis.

This is a great use of technology to provide learners an opportunity to listen and repeat, and then listen and compare to promote self-monitoring skills. One technical issue is that once I used the recorder function, audio playback was then through the iPad speaker rather than through my ear buds. Another great feature is that the audio files throughout the app use a variety of speakers (both male and female voices) so that the learner has access to a variety of speech types (note that all speakers use a Standard American accent with the exception of some samples of British and Australian speakers, which I will address later).

This final section includes seven modules that focus less on pronunciation or accent and more on the fun or humorous side of English. Tongue Twisters could help with pronunciation, though I do not advocate using them in an instructional setting because they are not authentic speech and they can cause frustration. The Homograph module presents sentences with common homographs (using sentences that appear familiar from other websites and e-mail forwards you may have received from family and co-workers). The Tricky Word List has some difficult words for learners to practice, but they are read so quickly that a learner would not have enough time to record them. Again, this is critical issue if one of the main selling points of this app is the ability to record yourself after hearing a native speaker and then go back to listen so you may compare your pronunciation to the model. I wonder if many of the audio clips used are from the CDs, where there was not the need to have a long enough pause after each modeled piece of language (to use this app like the Tandberg machines that I described earlier).

As a pronunciation trainer, I found many descriptions to be overgeneralizations. Some sections went into great detail, but then lacked common terminology in the field of teaching pronunciation (or even from other materials on accent training and even accent training for the stage that I have seen). While I had high hopes at the beginning for ample opportunities to listen and record my voice, as I went further through the app I found that recordings were rushed and I had trouble repeating the sample words or phrases before the speaker started the next word or phrase. This will surely frustrate learners who will certainly be much slower than I am at recording their voices.

Right now, I select a segment, export it to separate audio file then load it in AnkiSRS memorization software. It takes too long to do that and I could really spend the time learning American accent rather than creating the files. This new mode helps a lot with accent training for any language. I teach at the university and having a good accent is easier for my students to understand me and also helps when I give presentations. e24fc04721
