In Chandigarh, the mobile shops are always surrounded by a certain type of crowd. College Students compare camera quality between one another like professional reviewers. Venturing outside for a speedy lunch break to check on exchange offers. A family member letting his younger cousin try out their games.
But recently, quite a few of such talks have ended up in the same direction: purchase from a xiaomi store in Chandigarh that you hear about in casual conversations, typically as a follow-up to, “No seriously, prices are good.”
So, that's how it happened that one night, towards the end of the day, I walked into Anmol Mobiles in Sector 22.
I didn't intend to be here for long.
However, over the years, these mobile stores in Chandigarh changed in an unnoticed manner. They used to be transactional. You walked in, requested a model, haggled for 10 minutes, and walked out with a telephone box in plastic.
Now they have a very intimate feeling of a mini lifestyle space.
Somewhere Between Curiosity and Habit
The thing that I noticed first when I entered Anmol Mobiles is the mix of people.
While a teen was taking out a Redmi gaming phone, his father had been asking battery-related questions every two minutes. Two girls even did a phone cover comparison next to the accessories section, which is longer than some people's phone comparisons.
Nobody seemed hurried.
That's more important than they think.
There are still many stores operating that have aggressive selling energy. People here were free to walk around naturally between the Xiaomi devices, wireless earbuds, smartwatches, and charging accessories without anyone standing over them all the time standing over them.
It was a lighter mood.
Almost familiar.
Chandigarh Loves Smart Spending
Expensive taste, practical thinking is always the name of the game here.
They're looking for stylish phones, fluid performance, stellar cameras and solid battery life — and they're looking for value. No one likes to be over charged here. The buyers from Chandigarh are quick to catch on.
It's quite possible that this is the reason for the success of Xiaomi phones here.
In Chandigarh, I heard people talking in the xiaomi shop, which was a breath of fresh air.
Line up the camera, but won't heat up?
So, how many reels do you need for storage?
Actually, what about “fast charging kit is fast?”
Real questions. Real buyers.
Not all shoppers for a smartphone are interested in techno-babble. Most people need a phone that will last through the day without annoying them and that doesn't cause them grief.
Xiaomi knows how to strike a balance better than most brands.
Phones Are Part of Chandigarh’s Social Life Now
It begins to be sensed when you listen.
There a person in Sector 35 places his phone face up on the table as a sort of identification badge. In the coaching centres, students look at videos and post Instagram stories. When it comes to the camera on a smartphone, families are more passionate about it than they are about furniture.
The phone is no longer a piece of technology.
They’re social tools. Work tools. Entertainment systems. Tiny identity cards.
What was interesting about Anmol Mobiles was they seemed to know this change instinctively. There was no pressure on buyers to buy right away at the highest price. Staff did ask, first, what people would like to do with the phone.
One customer was looking to get better low light shooting for wedding ceremonies.
The second was looking for a dependable battery for extended work hours in the office.
Different lives. Different priorities.
Budget Doesn’t Feel “Budget” Anymore
The notion that cheap phones will look cheap has died out in no time at all.
I did some of these Xiaomi models and some of them really looked like they could be considered as being as good as much more expensive models. Slim designs. Bright AMOLED displays. Surprisingly smooth scrolling.
The camera systems were even more sleek looking than anticipated.
Truthfully, this is what's happening with Xiaomi in India these days. Users want performance and do not want to feel guilty about it afterwards.
This was a serene excitement in the xiaomi store in chandigarh that one could see the smart deals being found rather than the flashy luxury.
It was the most utilitarian way possible.
Sector 22 Still Knows How to Pull People In
It has a sort of timeless feel to Sector 22.
You pass through the market, and hear scooter horns, food vendors shouting, old Bollywood songs spilling out from nearby shops. The energy is the energy of a busy place, yet very comforting.
Then there are stores such as Anmol Mobiles that have found a balance between the newer generations while retaining that 'old Chandigarh warmth.
Shop owners continue to give recommendations on this. That the trust culture is not dead.
I was told by one such old customer around here that they literally say “You tell me which one will be better”.
This is the best marketing campaign ever, in my opinion, to explain Indian mobile shopping.
The Accessory Corner Was Weirdly Entertaining
I didn't think I'd be sitting there for a while trying to find out what I could do with the accessories, I guess I did.
Kids couldn’t get enough of those transparent cases. That person cranking up the wireless speaker too loud. Someone hitting play on their portable audio device way past reasonable levels. Two people laughing about identical phone shells they picked out together.
Maybe that’s why it was a memorable place.
It wasn't like it was too slick.
It felt lived-in.
A part of the Chandigarh life and not a corporate showroom trying to comprehend the customer.
Walking Out With More Than Just Phone Thoughts
Darkness crept in while bodies packed tighter around Sector 22. Along the curb, sellers flipped open crates, staking quiet claims on cracked concrete. Even with traffic jammed, people moved anyway - plastic grips in hand. They walked surefooted, heads up, ignoring the blare of horns and engines stuck mid-groan.
I was reminiscing about the differences in shopping habits between now and a few years ago.
No one purchases just a smart phone these days. They buy convenience. Camera confidence. Faster workdays. Improved wedding photos. Better mid-night gaming experience.
Of course, stores that know the emotional details will stand out.
Hence, it might be because of this that this specific xiaomi store in chandigarh is always bustling with activities.
Not because it is attention seeking.
It blends in with the city life around it so seamlessly.
