After finishing my spring semester at Purdue, I drove down to Nucor Tubular Products in Louisville Kentucky. What was supposed to be a 3 month internship turned into a 7 month co-op where I immersed myself in the company as an engineer. I learned a lot, growing my skills in part drawing and tolerancing, reverse engineering, machine design, and so much more.

One of my first big projects for Nucor was redesigning the cutoff encoder assembly for one of our 3 mills on site (mill 3). This encoder rides along the tube and is responsible for triggering a saw when the product has traveled a specified distance. The old design featured a vertical roller attached to an overly complicated assembly to apply pressure to the tubes. Our machine welds a seam along the top after forming the tube shape, so the surface on the top is not always smooth. Because of this, the encoder would occasionally read the distance traveled improperly, causing the saw to cut too early or late. The goal with the new design was to eliminate and simplify the encoder assembly for increased reliability.
