Since 2015, in Berlin, I had the opportunity to be involved in the management of various products in the area of ground transportation and travel in general.
In the ground transportation and travel domains, I had the chance to build countless API integrations with various players and platforms such as Global Distribution Systems (GDS), Online Travel Agencies (OTAs), airlines, hotels and travel agencies on both web and mobile.
During these years, I collected knowledge on the industry, expanded my product vision and strategy skills and perfected the passion for numbers from my early school years by diving into external market analysis, internal KPIs, performing analysis from different angles for the purpose of forecasting, deriving targets based on company OKRs and devising new ideas in order to grow the acquisition and optimize the retention of various product lines.
I expanded my leadership skills by building an efficient small team of product managers and significantly contributing to their career development, by being an efficient mentor for product managers at any level (intern, junior, senior, lead).
With my knowledge and experience, I contributed to the selection and hiring process of product managers, contributed to the creation of a competency matrix for product management roles and performed on-boarding and training for the new colleagues with great results, since they were able to contribute meaningfully to our product lines within 6 months from hiring.
I see myself as a lifelong learner and never get tired in exploring new products and learning about markets and industries.
I started my career as a software developer in 1999 in Romania with a project based assignment in FoxPro. During my university years, I found a real passion for the Java programming language, although I used to study and use other languages as well, such as Assembler, C, C++, C#, Visual Basic, LISP, Prolog.
All my jobs, including the one I had during my studies were Java development roles. I started my career in the city where I finished my university studies, Cluj, and then, in 2006, I moved to Bucharest where I tackled bigger projects for the European Commission, starting as a Senior Java Developer and then advancing in a Team Lead role where I worked on various projects and scaled a team from 3 to 35 developers, along with the growing number of projects.
I gained extensive experience in the selection and interviewing process for software development roles and built a strong team with 100% retention for 3 years.
With every line of code I wrote, my interest for the business and financials behind it grew, so, it came naturally my transition into a Technical Project Management role in more complex projects which I executed following strict standards such as CMMI Level 3. At all times I kept myself updated on the technology side and pursued my enterprise architect certification with Sun Microsystems (SCEA).
Since I moved to Berlin in 2012, I had the opportunity to be involved in the architecture of various products, in the area of real estate, where I led two teams on the introduction of brand new technologies at that time: MongoDB and ElasticSearch.
This marked the start of my journey into two sides marketplaces, which I continue with pleasure.
My experience entailed the selection and usage of new technologies for the storage and search used for the largest real estate website in Germany at the time, with the focus of ensuring scalability, radically optimizing performance (6X faster response times achieved), while achieving significant cost reduction (10X).
Along these, I was responsible with the capacity planning for hardware (pre-public cloud era), the support and documentation of backup, failover scenarios and disaster recovery for the clusters in use and the coordination of activities across Java developers and the DevOps teams.
While doing these activities, my passion for the business and financials continued to grow, which led me to the decision to pursue a product management career track.
