Facilitating percussion practice for high school band students is often exploring the topics of inclusivity, motivation, and ensemble instruction and practice. Most pedagogical perspectives, including research on band percussion sections, observe the practice of percussionists in their school environments which can provide assumptions of students' home practice. However, high school percussion students can be challenged in their home practice with limitations in instrument availability and accessibility as well as allocated space for practice, and often lead students to rely on their rehearsal and lesson time to practice and learn multiple instruments. Despite these limitations, they are still expected to be at an equal standard to their fellow band members. This clinic aims to educate an audience on the challenges in percussion practice, and how as teachers we can better support high school percussionists across schools and homes.
Anna Kho is an Australian-Chinese/Taiwanese artist specialising in classical and jazz percussion. She is an advocate for percussion instrumental music education as a teacher and researcher, and aims to better support teachers, students, and parents on how to facilitate the practice of multiple instruments across schools and homes. As a Doctor of Philosophy candidate at The University of Queensland, her interdisciplinary research explored the social and cultural learning phenomenon of high school percussion practice in Queensland schools and contributed to the fields of instrumental music education, percussion pedagogy, music practice, and cultural psychology in education. Anna is also a registered teacher in Victoria and has been tutoring percussion in ensemble and lessons for over ten years. As a performer, she was a featured guest artist in projects such as Matt Hsu’s Obscure Orchestra, Drummer Queens (QLD), Playlab Theatre, and UQ Taiko.
