Throughout my time at Indiana University Indianapolis, my experience did not unfold as I had expected. I had originally came into college with a plan of everything that I wanted to get involved with: the classes, professors, extracurriculars and experiences. However, many things that I had planned did not come to pass, and that is due to my growth as a student during my time here. I have been in rooms that I never thought possible, and also conquered fears that I never thought I could.Â
During Hon-H200, I created a journey map that shows my journey to IU Indy. It shows how I became the way I am today, and what my motivations are in my future. Though my motivations have not changed, my skills and experiences have strengthened my ability to accomplish my now changed goals, and have given me the confidence I need to succeed!
Though I came into college with the expectation to learn and gain clinical experience in the hopes of becoming a physician, my experiences branched out in ways that I never expected. I was able to pursue research targeting the relationship between climate change and vector born disease, and show how informatics can be a bridge that can help clinicians make better informed practices. I was able to volunteer at many different places that helped me gain the full understanding of a patient's story, within and outside the clinical setting. I was also able to learn more about other communities, widening my horizon to new opportunities and experiences that I would not have known had I now been surrounded by peers who pushed me to look beyond.
My past goals, though still relevant and a major part of my life, have evolved into a broader understanding of what it really means to care for patients. I now understand through my experiences that my career in medicine is not simply one of manual labor, but also a way for me to practice emapthy and awareness in social and environmental settings. Within the honors college, I have been able to find a clearer understanding of my purpose, and have strengthened my resolve to become a physician who serves and protects my community through a holistic perspective.
