Reflection:
Reflecting on my three biochemistry honors contracts, I realize how much my approach to learning has evolved. During the first contract, where I explored inborn errors of metabolism, I was struck by how delicate and interconnected biochemical pathways are. What once felt like abstract reactions on a page suddenly became real when I researched the devastating effects a single enzyme deficiency could cause in a person’s life. This experience shifted my mindset, as I no longer viewed biochemistry as memorization, but as a foundation for understanding human health. In my second contract, where I analyzed primary literature on enzyme kinetics, I encountered a new kind of challenge: learning how to read scientific papers critically. Initially, the dense data and unfamiliar experimental methods were intimidating. I found myself rereading articles multiple times, questioning my interpretations, and even doubting my ability to fully grasp them. However, with persistence, I developed strategies for breaking down studies into manageable parts, which not only improved my comprehension but also built my confidence as an emerging scholar. The third contract brought everything together when I created a model connecting protein structure changes to clinical diseases like Alzheimer's. Designing this project forced me to apply knowledge creatively and clinically, imagining how a molecular detail could ripple out to affect an entire person’s life. It was in this final project that I truly saw myself stepping beyond the role of a student into someone capable of thinking critically, asking meaningful questions, and making connections across disciplines. These experiences didn’t just deepen my understanding of biochemistry, rather they reshaped how I view learning itself. I now approach challenges with more patience, curiosity, and a sense of ownership over my education, values I know will continue to guide me as I pursue a career in science and medicine.
