"The Hype": My favorite song off Twenty One Pilots' new album, Trench. It touches upon the band's popularity and sticking to what you care about through it all.

Twenty One Pilots recently entered the popular music scene in 2015 with their singles "Ride" and "Stressed Out." However their musical style is in many ways abnormal within the popular music category; their lyrics are filled with spiritual and mental health struggles, and their musical genre floats between a handful of styles, like pop, reggae, hip hop, and alternative. Twenty One Pilots challenges what popular music entails and how it's meant to interact with its audiences, by not simply spitting out love songs or music that boils down to the pleasure of "feeling good." Rather, they're trying to push their fans to think more deeply and engage more creatively with popular music. Especially with their newest album, Trench, they are proving that audiences cannot passively listen to their music in the background like most popular standardized music; instead, its lyrical depth and intricate rhythms require a consumer's full attention.
