Hello! Thank you for stopping by.

I am currently (fall 2023) a Ph.D. Candidate in Philosophy at Purdue University, where I will graduate and earn the degree in the spring of 2024. In my undergraduate studies, I majored in Law (Universidad Libre) and Philosophy (Universidad de Cartagena) and earned a license to practice law in Colombia.

My main areas of research are social and political philosophy and human rights.

My areas of teaching competency include philosophy of law, applied ethics (esp. global ethics, technology, biomedical, and animals) and Kant.

My main research focuses on the problem of widespread implementation of human rights. I investigate how we can make the content of international instruments on human rights, such as covenants and treaties, frequently applicable in all contexts. I argue that the problem of widespread implementation of human rights norms is two-fold insofar as it concerns (i) recognition of their content, which is often difficult due to cultural or political disputes, and/or (ii) the enforcement of related policies through administrative institutions.

Part of my project develops an interpretation of social contract theory. I propose to look at the causal and explanatory properties of social contract theory to elaborate on the relationship between informal (cultural) and formal (legal) norms of human rights. The wave of constitutionalism in Latin America in the 1980s and 1990s offers the perfect scenario to apply the framework of the contract and to identify lessons and strategies potentially applicable on a global scale. In particular, I seek to show how a reconsideration of the national political pact contained in political constitutions may be a successful strategy to strengthen the incorporation of human rights norms in domestic normativity.

I have other on going research projects on human dignity, state responsibility to former insurgent citizens, and military humanitarian interventions.

Here is my CV. Upon request I can share more information about my professional development as an instructor of philosophy, and about my research projects.
