It's a neat idea, and 'Last Action Hero' has a handful of funny scenes to support it. Early on, bored at school, Danny fantasizes about Schwarzenegger taking over for Laurence Olivier in 'Hamlet' and blowing the hell out of Denmark. In Slater's crazy celluloid universe, the LAPD is populated by all sorts of wacko cops in outlandish uniforms. Blink-and-you'll-miss-'em celebrity cameos pop up all over (Sharon Stone as Catherine Trammel, Robert Patrick as the T-1000, Danny DeVito as the voice of an animated cat detective). The film takes pot-shots at action movie clichs like the crusty police captain, the hero's bad puns, the overly-talky killer, the cop killed with only two days to retirement, a chase through the oft-used L.A. River, and many ridiculous stunts and explosions. Schwarzenegger is plenty game to send-up his own persona and career. And the meta-filmic twists go into overdrive when the main villain (Charles Dance, delightfully creepy) escapes into the real world with a plot to disrupt the 'Jack Slater IV' premiere and kill the true Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Unfortunately, these things take up maybe 15-20 minutes of screen time in a 131-minute movie. Whatever good ideas the original script may have held were eventually watered down through countless rewrites, studio interference, test screening feedback, and last-minute reshoots. Danny is an incredibly whiny and annoying lead character that engenders no audience sympathy at all. (I can't blame poor Austin O'Brien too much; I'm sure the kid did exactly what everyone asked of him.) The hiring of John McTiernan (from 'Predator' and 'Die Hard') also turned out to be a much bigger mistake than anyone realized. The director may be deft with the action stuff, but has no sense of comedy whatsoever. Far too many of the gags in the movie are thuddingly unfunny. For long stretches of the film, everyone seems to forget that they're making a spoof of dumb action movies, and instead just proceed to make a dumb action movie.

Looking back nearly thirty years later on John McTiernan's meta-action comedy brings about renewed respect. Last Action Hero is like a four-course meal made at a Michelin star restaurant. The perfect people bringing about the perfect creation.

A meta-action film that sees a young boy on an adventure with a character from a long running action franchise who enters the real world and must stop his fictional villains from killing the actor who plays him is like the action movie version of a Wes Craven movie; the brash, aggressive cousin of Scream and New Nightmare.

McTiernan having made iconic action films like Predator and Die Hard is a perfect fit for directing a send up of the macho kill-a-thon action movies of the past decade, and re-teaming with his Predator star Arnold Schwarzenegger makes sense. Despite some fun banter about this being a universe where Sylvester Stallone is the star of The Terminator franchise, only Arnie could play the role of Jack Slater. Stallone is a much more respectable actor, he has weight, but Schwarzenegger gets the joke and plays it with just enough knowing humour.

The screenplay, from action maestro Shane Black and David Arnott is another stroke of genius. The cliches of the genre were pretty much created by Black with films like Lethal Weapon, so for him to send up his own genre of ultra-violence movies is another fun twist in the tale. It's also clearly Black's work since it concerns a young boy teaming up with an action hero.

Intended to be an action parody of classic Arnie flicks - and, perhaps ironically, Shane Black action films - Last Action Hero was beset by bad fortune, epitomising its own Wrong Place, Wrong Time cliche by landing in cinemas within days of Jurassic Park, and ending up unsurprisingly utterly buried. But it wasn't all bad luck. McTiernan would say it was largely hobbled by a rushed post-production process to desperately meet a release date which should have been delayed for a multitude of reasons. Since Black didn't write the original script, he could always argue that the original idea was unfixable, whilst the original screenwriters could argue that Black's almost completely reworked vision was flawed. Everybody had a get out of jail free card, but none of it stopped Last Action Hero from tanking completely.

The movie universe is full of in-jokes, meta humour and some frequently excellent ideas, and Arnie commendably utterly committed to sending up his own action persona, whilst Charles Dance bides his time whilst waiting to steal the movie when it shifts to the real world. After a protracted period of surreal OTT shenanigans, the movie then lands in the real world to take on the familiar fish-out-of-water format, with Dance whipping up a storm as the devilish antagonist whilst Arnie struggles with real-world issues like... having to reload.

McTiernan was arguably a great choice to direct this kind of movie because he absolutely knew his way around the movies he was trying to send up here, and Black was theoretically a great writer for it, but unfortunately it wasn't really to be, with Black a way off perfecting his brand of self-parody (he was better at buddy-buddy action-comedy-thrills a la Lethal Weapon, Last Boy Scout and Long Kiss Goodnight, originally, but would eventually nail the self-aware near-parody blend in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang). Perhaps the film was mismarketed, badly edited, rushed to release, and trapped in the shadow of Arnie's action icon status - with the seminal Terminator 2 still fresh in audiences' minds - and perhaps it also struggled from a lack of identity, with the writers arguing, or possibly not even knowing, what this was really trying to be. It's not a kids' movie (earning a surprising 15 rating in the UK), but it frequently feels like it should be. Arnie would ultimately do far better having knowing fun on a grand scale in Cameron's True Lies the following year, a film which knew exactly what it wanted to be and got the blend just right.

Despite being a blockbuster action movie which sends up big blockbuster action movies, Last Action Hero is a frequently quite visually lacklustre affair, with a few surprisingly low key settings and pastel tones, and only a few instances of striking pop - notably when they send up Hamlet, although the spot colour effects in that particular monochrome sequence don't comfortably translate to 4K HDR. Really though, despite the original style, or frequent lack thereof (the opening and closing scenes notwithstanding), Last Action Hero has simply never looked this good.

Last Action Hero was an original screenplay by Zak Penn and Adam Leff, meant to parody typical action-film screenplays of writers such as Shane Black.
