First, take a look at Rick Steves' tips! This was the very first thing I did after signing up for the Scotland tour:
A quick selfie showing off my luggage. I recommend a backpack that straps in the front for extra support. I also minimally packed my smaller bag so that I could have room for gifts/souvenirs.
Pack light! There's a reason why Rick Steves mentions this so often. A backpack and small bag worked very well for me. (Make sure to practice going for walks with your backpack fully packed. It can feel a little heavy after a while).
Don't be afraid to do things on your own! I was initially nervous about going to restaurants or wandering cities alone. Keep your guidebook handy, research a few places to visit ahead of time, and enjoy yourself!
Also, don't be afraid to ask for pictures! My group mates were always willing to snap a quick picture for me, and I was always happy to return the favor.
Be flexible! I changed my free time plans many times depending on the weather, local events, my mood, etc. Make a large to-do list so you have back-up plans.
Step out of your comfort zone! This is the time for meeting new people and experiencing new things. Chat with the shop owners, get to know your group mates. Traveling alone doesn't necessarily mean being alone all the time.
"If you are waiting for a better time, you will be waiting for the rest of your life."
A Rick Steves tour is an unforgettable experience! Everything went smoothly, we all had a great time, and my only problem in the end was the question, "Where should I go next??"
I am so happy that I chose to step out of my comfort zone and pursue my dream, rather than wait around for the "right moment" or for a partner to travel with.
"Traveling on your own is fun, challenging, vivid, and exhilarating. Realizing that you have what it takes to be your own guide is a thrill known only to solo travelers. Your trip is a gift from you to you."
