## Inspiration

With the recent COVID 19 virus, over 1.7 billion students and teachers (>90% of learners, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impact_of_the_2019–20_coronavirus_pandemic_on_education)currently do not have an easy, reliable infrastructure to transition fully online. Many platforms like Google Classrooms and Khanacademy are optimally built to supplement in-person learning for existing schools, not serve as an alternative.

## Purpose

Americanteachers.com envisions a reality where the experience of going to school online will be almost indistinguishable, if not better, than going in-person. It will revolutionize how we educate people onto the 21st/22nd century and serve as a global model for schools transitioning online.

## What it does

The app provides existing and upcoming teachers/students the platform necessary to create or continue their education under an online school. Teachers can offer courses and invite existing/prospective students to their virtual classroom or host faculty meetings, while students can join existing or interesting classrooms. It will also provide resources for teachers to recruit and engage students with particular interests, and for students to look up requirements and classes they would like to take or create under a school-sanctioned club/event.

The app links to Canvas and Zoom for teachers/students to do live group chats, assignments, and testing ; as well as other resources for additional supplements (eg Khanacademy, Udemy, Coursera).

## Envisioning a reality

Under the online school, teachers and students would adhere to a much shorter, more efficient standard academic schedule (10-2 vs 8-3) with a focus on letting students choose what they want to learn under the guidance of their teachers. The idea is to create an centralized online school platform for teachers and students to connect and leverage existing tools (ie Canvas, Zoom). This will be different from the traditional teacher-to-student lecture format since it will be the students who will get to choose what they would like to work on. The teachers will act as mentors to moderate and guide student progress. In the future, we would like to recruit more US-licensed school teachers, students and other faculty to better facilitate this significant transition. Moreover, we would like to see if this platform can be helpful for those currently working in the commercial sector (ie facilitating online businesses).

## Features Needed

We will need to create a log-in/sign-up page, main dashboard to track student progress, a button feature to forward users to Canvas and Zoom, and features for students/teachers to take screenshots of their work as well as a way for students to make sure they are not opening another tab/program when taking tests.

Eventually, I would like the platform to offer templates (eg PPT, activities) designed to meet California's Common Core Standards (see california common core standards, https://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/finalelaccssstandards.pdf) for teachers that may need help with continuing/supplementing student education, a virtual nurse where students/teachers can facetime a US-licensed health professional to assess mental/physical health, virtual break room to chat/eat with another peer or in a group setting, a virtual administration room for any faculty/student-related issues, as well as a button feature on the dashboard where students can join/create their own school-sanctioned clubs.

Again, some immediate tasks we will need to complete: A login/sign up page, main dashboard, integration with Canvas/Zoom, test surveillance (ie making sure students do not open another tab/program), and ability to screenshot.

## Goal for the Hackathon

To create a Minimum Viable Product for students and teachers to use immediately.

## Long-term goals

Hire new USA-licensed and certified teachers with Bachelor's degrees to teach students in the USA/World for at least a semester who can adhere to California's Common Core Standards (see california common core standards, https://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/finalelaccssstandards.pdf), virtual nurse and other faculty to maintain the platform.

## Benefits

Teachers, students, and others around the world can adhere to a better, more efficient foundation of teaching and learning that is in an easy-to-use, centralized platform.

The Online School: For Teachers

Online platform for full/part-time teachers to do what they love: teach.

We are looking for teachers with Bachelor's degrees and with good knowledge of utilizing Canvas and Zoom. Must adhere to a given schedule as well as teaching under California's Common Core Standards (see california common core standards, https://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/finalelaccssstandards.pdf) with respect to their grades they would like to teach for the duration of the semester(s). Attendance is to be taken. In addition, we hope for each teacher to have minimum 5 students per classroom, up to 20 students max for the duration of the semester - Teachers with existing classrooms are exempt. Students will be assigned according to their respective time zones/requests. We hope to pay teachers between $20-$30/hr (or $40K-$60K/yr depending on experience) and offer bonuses. A test will be held at the end of every month to assess the level of progress for students in each class.
