American Airlines has airline tickets, cheap flights, vacation packages and American Airlines Advantage bonus mile offers at aa.com/flighchange . Since each airline has its own restrictions and rules in place, the airline’s direct website is the best resource for all the details, especially as things continue to change.

Same-day aa.com/flightchange allows you to confirm a seat on a different flight on your day of departure on any American Airlines and/or American Eagle flight where eligible seats are available. The alternate flight must be for your same origin and destination and your aa.com/flightchange can only be confirmed within 24 hours of departure of the desired flight.

You can make the change on aa.com/flightchange, at the airport (at the self-service kiosk or ticket counter) or call Reservations.

If you still want to try for a different flight, same-day standby lets you standby for an earlier American or American Eagle flight (with the same routing on your day of departure). Unlike same-day flight change, same-day standby doesn’t guarantee a seat on a flight.

You can aa.com/flightchange or cancel your trip online in just a few steps. Here’s how :

1. Find your trip

   • You'll need your 6-character confirmation (also called a ‘Record Locator’).

   • If you don't know your Record Locator, you can find it in the confirmation email you received when you booked your trip.

2. Choose from the toolbar

   • Choose 'aa.com/flightchange trip' or 'Cancel trip' in the top toolbar and follow the prompts.

3. Check your email

   • When you’re done, we'll send you an email with the information you need, including your ticket number.

   • Keep this handy so you can refer to it when you rebook.

   • If you’re an Advantage member and had your account number listed in your reservation before cancellation, you can log into your account and view available Flight Credit in your wallet.

Making aa.com/flightchange to flights is so common that airlines actually overbook flights where possible, based on the assumption that a certain percentage of booked passengers will not actually make a particular flight. If more passengers show up than the plane can accommodate, the airline asks for volunteers to accept a voucher for a later flight. American Airlines issues approximately 250 such vouchers a day, as of February 2011. The airlines provides a number of options for re-booking your itinerary. The amount of time remaining until the flight takes off affects your available choices.
