Organization: The school is governed by the Board of Directors of Quality Schools International, the membership of which is formed and set forth in the Bylaws of Quality Schools International. An advisory board, which assists the school in its operation, is composed of six to 10 members residing in Baku and appointed jointly by the president of Quality Schools International and the director of QSIB.

Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, QSIB has 79 total staff, 30 teachers, 14 of whom are U.S. citizens, 15 host-country nationals, and 1 third-country national. All teaching faculty maintain a current teaching certificate from their country of origin.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, enrollment was 180 students (three-year-olds through grade 12), 29 from the United States, including 76 from Azerbaijan, and 75 third-country nationals. There are 29 different nationalities represented.

Facilities: QSIB is conveniently located near the Ganjlik district of Baku. The school has gone through a complete remodeling with additional classrooms, science labs, computer lab, portable laptop lab, makers space, two-level library, separate lower elementary library, new security entry, central air and heat, an art center, a full-size gymnasium with basketball and volleyball facilities, indoor climbing wall, an industrial kitchen and cafeteria, a two-level 600-seat auditorium, administrative offices, and a faculty room. The building is outfitted with an elevator to meet the needs of students needing assistance with stairs. Outdoor facilities include a covered preschool playground with artificial turf, outdoor jungle gym complex complete with corkscrew and wave slides on artificial turf, nine swings, and an all-season covered soccer pitch. Students have multiple access points to purified drinking water. Security measures include a centralized fire alarm/intercom system for emergencies, generator backup, a high security wall, safe haven to house all students and staff and an extensive playground under 24/7 guard duty.

The Baku International Model United Nations (BAKUIMUN) conference is hosted by the Baku Oxford School, one of the leading seconday schools in Azerbaijan. Hosted since 2007, BAKUIMUN hosts over 300 students from the Caucus region, both international and domestic students. The Baku Oxford School has a long history in Model United Nations and is one of the leading programs in Azerbaijan.

Students applying to the All-American Model UN team should have a consistent performance of excellence, not just in Model United Nations also academically. We will assess each candidate on an individual basis and not against one another. Students should use their application to illustrate their strengths and progress throughout high school.

Teymurlu was part of EducationUSA, a U.S. Department of State program that promotes higher education to students around the world. He traveled to the U.S. while in high school for a summer camp and visited Florida.

His father, Mahmood Teymurov, liked the country and the more rural setting of the university and encouraged his son to attend UWRF. Teymurlu also has a sister, Nargiz Teymurlu, who has visited UW-River Falls, and is graduating from high school in Azerbaijan this year.

In this talk, Dr. Song shares the results of a qualitative study examining the intersecting experiences of (dis)ability and refugee backgrounds for North Korean students. Researchers have previously found that school-age refugees and asylum-seekers are frequently characterized as experiencing physical, emotional, or psychological disabilities or disorders in schools because of the adversity that they face and a lack of adequate resources during their refugee journey. In their relocated society, many refugee students are interpreted as having disabilities or receiving special education services. While refugee experiences are often framed as causing deficits in students, the purpose of this study was to better understand the interplay of (dis)ability and refugee identity at a school that publicly proclaimed refugee experience as an asset. The findings of this study build on previous research by demonstrating how disability is both embodied and constructed, not only through refugee experiences, but also through the effects of living within the culture, policies, and educational structures of a new society. Findings also demonstrate the culturally relevant philosophical approaches and practices that teachers used to support North Korean to develop a positive understanding about their identity. In this talk, Dr. Song shares implications and recommendations directed to educators, school administrators, and practitioners who work with diverse student demographics, including those with refugee backgrounds.

Dr. Yosung Song is an Assistant Professor in the Education Department at Moravian College. She received her Ph.D. in Special Education and Disability Studies at Syracuse University. Her research interests include the intersection of disability and refugee identity, and implementing inclusive practices to support diverse students, especially those with refugee backgrounds. She conducted research on inclusive education in township schools in South Africa and about disability in the context of North Korea. Her research has published book chapters and in journals such as Disability and the Global South and Canadian Journal of Children's Rights. She is originally from South Korea where she taught students with and without disabilities in public elementary schools.

Dr. Rebecca Tarlau is Assistant Professor of Education and Labor Studies at the Pennsylvania State University. She was inspired to pursue a career in education by her experiences with community organizing in Latin America and the United States, where she witnessed the potential education has to advance economic and racial justice in poor communities. Dr. Tarlau is compelled by the question, what role does education play in facilitating social change, both within formal school systems and in informal contexts? She completed her doctorate in Social and Cultural Studies in Education at the University of California, Berkeley, and a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. Her research agenda has three broad areas of focus: (1) theories of the state and state-society relations; (2) social movements, critical pedagogy, and learning; (3) Latin American education and development. Her scholarship engages in debates in the fields of political sociology, international and comparative education, social movements, critical pedagogy, global and transnational sociology, and social theory. Her recent book reflects these findings: Occupying Schools, Occupying Land: How the Landless Workers Movement Transformed Brazilian Education (Oxford University Press, 2019).

American River College's Interior Design Department is mindful of the challenges students may have with commitments outside of school. We offer online classes with various class times on three, six, and eight-week schedules to accommodate the diverse student population. When planning your course schedule, we recommend referring to the catalog to see how a class is offered and if the class alternates being taught in the fall or spring.
