On one hand it makes sense that it would ship with support for all languages. On the other hand, I know how big text-to-speech voices can be, so it'd also make sense to only include the native language, and in the US that may not include the UK voice.

You can determine which voices are available with [AVSpeechSynthesisVoice speechVoices]. This returns loads of languages including (and the equivalent voice on the Mac):en-AU - Karenen-GB - Danielen-IE - Moiraen-US - Samanthaen-ZA - Tessa

I can't see any reason why the US version would have any less voices. Indeed it presumably has at least one more as Siri in the US has a choice of male and female voices - the male voice sounds like it be Alex from the Mac, but there doesn't seem to be any way to access it programmatically.

Methods:  Forty-eight trans female patients were treated for vocal feminization. Twenty-seven patients underwent VT, and 21 patients underwent VT with additional glottoplasty (VTWG). Pre- and posttreatment acoustic measures, Trans Woman Voice Questionnaire (TWVQ), and Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) data were compared.

Results:  Glottoplasty in combination with VT elevated average speaking fundamental frequency (SF0) to a greater extent than VT alone (P < .0001). The VTWG group achieved a 42-Hz increase in SF0, whereas the VT group achieved a 15-Hz increase in SF0. In both the VT and VTWG groups, the lower bound of physiologic range increased by 18 Hz (P = .0008 and P = .016, respectively). The addition of glottoplasty also resulted in greater improvement in voice-related quality of life. Improvement in TWVQ and VHI-10 was significantly greater in the VTWG group than the VT group (P = .007 and P = .029, respectively). TWVQ showed statistically significant improvement in the VTWG group only.

Traditionally, automated voice prompts have been done using a female voice. This supposedly dates back to World War II when female automated voices were used in airplane cockpits because they could be easily differentiated among the male pilots. Today, about 75% of IVR systems use female voices. Widespread intelligent assistants on smartphones are also generally female voices. Even though female voices are more pervasive, it is important to understand the connotations male and female voices carry in order to best equip your company.

In choosing an IVR voice, you should think about customer perceptions in addition to what they might simply prefer. When communicating with an IVR system, how consumers perceive the voice impacts their experience and communication with a company, and perhaps future actions. Perception varies widely when it comes to male and female voices.

Not all companies however are attempting to sell a product or service. Some companies for example, such as financial companies, often need their IVR system to communicate with customers in order to settle balances, change account settings, and more. In this situation, the company is likely focused more on the task at hand than how the consumer perceives the IVR voice. When task completion is the top priority, it is not always best to choose the most soothing voice and perhaps lean towards the more forceful voice. As mentioned, male voices are considered more forceful, so a male voice becomes the more suitable option. In contrast, health insurance companies often attempt to convey a more soothing tone, which explains why most health insurance companies use female IVR voices, as female voices are considered more soothing than male voices. As for other industries, the use of voice varies as the product, demographic, and intent varies.

Due to the popularity and significance of IVR systems and voice automation, there exists an abundance of voices to choose from and many different companies to work with. There are three voice options you can consider: human voice talent, text-to-speech (TTS) voices, or some combination of each. These voice options have positives and negatives, but again the choice is ultimately yours. Human voice talent provides personalized speech recordings that have the benefit of sounding truly human. However, they also have the disadvantage of being less flexible. Because the voice is prerecorded, it is more common for human talent voices to use directed dialogue, which gives the customer less flexibility and can negatively affect the customer experience.

This may not have been something you noticed until now, and some will argue that several AI voice automated systems now come with the option of a male voice. However, the fact is the default voice on most voice assistants is female and, for the most part, has a female name.

This form of AI is increasingly a part of our daily life. Almost 3 billion people are currently using voice automated software to assist with setting their alarms in the morning, to find a nearby takeaway or even check the weather for the weekend, and the number of voice assistant users is expected to grow exponentially over the coming years.

There are an overwhelming number of studies that suggest humans prefer the sound of a female voice, and some even theorise our preference for female voices begins when we are fetuses, as these sounds would soothe and calm us in the womb.

However, this preference has been heavily disputed, and the many myths surrounding the idea that female voices are easier to hear even when using small speakers or over background noise have been proven to be false.

Female voice recordings date back to 1878 when Emma Nutt became the first woman to be a telephone operator. Her voice was so well received, she became the standard all other companies strived to emulate. By the end of the 1880s, telephone operators were exclusively female.

Ward said it would have taken over a year to create a male voice for Google Assistant, and after this completion, there was no guarantee it would have been of a high enough quality or received well by users.

It appears the gender bias in voice automation is down to a lack of data and widely accepted and unchallenged perceptions of the female voice. When you have all this information stacked up in front of you, creating male voice automated software may seem like an impossible task.

By 2027, the global market value of AI is expected to reach $267 billion. AI and voice assistants, in particular, are becoming a vital part of our daily routines, yet there are no industry-wide guidelines based on the humanization of AI.

Companies need to be encouraged to disclose the demographic of their AI development teams, any research findings including user preferences for voices, as well as any research on gender-neutral AI voices.

If our AI development teams are more diverse, we will have a workforce that will be able to address complex gender issues before and during the production of new voice assistants. So, if we want our teams to be more diverse, we need to set up strong educational foundations that are inclusive to all.

We can achieve this by increasing the number of learning channels available to students from secondary school level onward, and have female, transgender and non-binary individuals take an active role in development of AI course materials. If students can see they are being represented in courses they are studying, they are more likely to continue in further education.

However, by opting to use more advanced machine learning developments as well as having more open discussions about gender representation in voice automation, we can take the steps towards creating more inclusive AI products.

Thanks for confirming that everything is updated to the latest version, as well for the information provided. Let me share that currently there isn't an option to customize the voices for the voice cues function. I know how motivating it was to have a male voice cues when exercising, and be sure that our team often reviews the comments posted by our members to work on the app and enhance your experience with our products.
