If you plan to move VMs without rebooting them, between virtualization hosts that may use different generations of processors, you should enable processor compatibility mode. For example, you would enable processor compatibility mode to ensure that you can live migrate your VMs between cluster nodes that use different processor feature sets. You could also use processor compatibility mode to save a VM and restore it on a host computer that has a different processor feature set than the source host.

Processor compatibility mode ensures that the set of processor features available to VMs across a disparate set of virtualization hosts will match by presenting only a limited set of processor features to the VM. Processor compatibility mode hides newer processor instructions sets, typically those introduced within the last 10 years. However, hiding these features means that the guest operating system and application software cannot take advantage of these processor instruction set enhancements.

The following example describes how AES encryption is affected by using processor compatibility mode, and there are many more. If you are concerned about the performance impact of processor compatibility mode, it is best to compare VM workload performance with processor compatibility mode enabled and with it disabled.

One example of an operation that is impacted by processor compatibility mode is AES encryption (a common form of encryption). Many new Intel and AMD processors include an ISA extension that accelerates AES by using hardware. Intel claims this optimization provides a 2-3 fold performance gain, with some implementations providing a 10-fold gain. (For more information, see Intel Advanced Encryption Standard Instructions.)

You may see additional parameters for Set-VMProcessor that are intended for use with Azure Stack HCI. Do not attempt to use these with Windows Server, or you will get an error message. The default and only CompatibilityForMigrationMode available for Windows Server is MinimumFeatureSet. Learn about dynamic CPU compatibility mode in Azure Stack HCI.

You'll need to reboot after that. I've written a PowerShell script that will toggle this for you and confirm it with dialog boxes. It even self-elevates to Administrator using this technique so that you can just right click and run the script to quickly change your Hyper-V mode. It could easily be modified to reboot for you as well, but I personally didn't want that to happen. Save this as hypervisor.ps1 and make sure you've run Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned so that you can run PowerShell scripts.

A recent post about Los Gatos and a post a while back about Mac and Dewalt batteries being interchangeable got me wondering, how many new 3rd party battery / tools are now available? Maybe readers could add to this list. Even if not sold in the U.S.A. I am curious if anyone has found any cross compatibility with any of the major tool brands.

To use this utility:

Download and unzip AMD-V_Hyper-V_Compatibility_Check_Utility.zip.

Change to the directory where the files were extracted to and click on amdhyperv.exe.

On Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, you need to run the application with elevated privilege, so right click the .exe and select run as administrator.

The sections below explain what actions will cause a .tde extract to upgrade to a .hyper extract, common issues you may experience, and important compatibility considerations that will arise after upgrading your Tableau product (for example, Tableau Desktop, Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server are not upgraded simultaneously). Please review this content as part of your upgrade plan.

After an upgrade of Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, or Tableau Cloud, you might experience new issues or behaviors with your extracts and/or workbooks. Performing specific actions will change the existing .tde extract to the new .hyper extract format.
